Coral reefs πͺΈ are critical ecosystems for undersea life ππ, they protect coastal areas by lessening the power of waves hitting the coast, and they provide a vital source of income for millions of people.
According to the 2016 Low Carbon Monitor Report, 98 percent βΌοΈ of Southeast Asian coral reefs would perish by 2050, effectively extinction by the end of the century if present global warming trends continue.
If coral reefs ceased to exist fish and other marine animals would lose vital food, shelter, and spawning places, and biodiversity π would suffer significantly as a result. Marine food webs would be disrupted, and many commercially important species would become extinct. β οΈβ οΈ
