The Papua New Guinea Biodiversity and Climate Fund (PNG BCF) is a grant-making institution established to address biodiversity loss and climate change in PNG. It was established in 2022 with funding from the UNDP GEF-6 project. The fund will transition from being housed within the UNDP to an independent legal structure.
Key aspects of the PNG BCF:
Funding:
The PNG BCF raises funds from various sources like multilateral and bilateral donors, foundations, and the private sector.
Grant Making:
It channels funds to non-governmental organizations and community groups implementing conservation and climate projects in PNG.
Mission:
The PNG BCF aims to provide financial and technical resources to restore, protect, and enhance the country's biodiversity and build climate resilience.
Transition:
During a 3-5 year transition, the fund will be housed within the UNDP country office in PNG.
Focus Areas:
The fund supports projects focused on nature and ecosystem-based solutions across Papua New Guinea.
Stakeholder Consultation:
The fund was established through a multi-stakeholder consultation process.
Other relevant climate finance initiatives in PNG:
Green Climate Fund (GCF):
PNG has developed a Country Programme with the GCF to strategically address climate change. This program aligns with national planning frameworks and priorities.
REDD+ Program:
The GCF approved a USD 63.4 million REDD+ program for PNG to protect forests and enhance livelihoods.
PNG-Australia Partnership Incentive Fund:
This fund prioritizes projects considering climate change and disaster resilience Incentive Fund.
ADB Grant:
The Asian Development Bank provided a $24.2 million grant to build PNG's resilience to climate change Asian Development Bank
