Wewak, Papua New Guinea – In Paliama Village, mothers from cocoa-farming families now leave home at 6:30 a.m. with small bilum bags, not heavy loads of produce. Two years ago, that walk often began at 4 a.m., when low cocoa income forced them to sell vegetables at roadside markets. Today, Ramangs Cocoa offers families more choices — and more reliable cash flow.

“The biggest change,” says Jonathan Krisawa, lead farmer and director of Ramangs Cocoa Development Project, “was moving from informal cocoa farming to a structured, quality-driven system. Farmers now understand quality, work together, and sell with confidence.”

Ramangs unites 710 growers across 10 villages. With EU-STREIT PNG support, the cooperative adopted fermentation boxes, solar drying beds, and strict post-harvest protocols. The results: higher bean quality, stronger market trust, and direct exports. In late 2025, Ramangs shipped 2,032 kilograms of dried cocoa to New Caledonia, with Australian buyers already lined up.

Cash flow has doubled to PGK 263,000. Families are saving, building permanent houses, and paying school fees. Women serve on the executive, youth are trained in bud-grafting and fermentary management, and farmers report improved access to healthcare and daily essentials.

For Krisawa, the transformation is clear: “Through cocoa, our farmers can save, build good houses, pay school fees, and meet their children’s needs. This project will remain strong into the future.”

The stage is focus on PNG cocoa excellence at the Greater Sepik Cocoa Trade Expo with more than 150 farmers/agribusinesses across the country taking part and participants are reminded to learn as much as they can during interactions as well as from the chocolatiers and international judges to further improve and advance cocoa quality in the country to attract premium niche markets for a better price.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony in the presence of New Zealand High Commissioner to PNG Her Excellency Georgina Roberts and parliamentarians from the Sepik region at the Sir Michael Thomas Somare Stadium on Monday 21 April, EU-STREIT PNG Programme Coordinator, Dr Rabi Rasaily, said: “Without you (farmers), there is no chocolate and semi-products of cocoa. This is your event. The quality starts with you so please explain well to the chocolatiers how you make your quality or how you can improve,” adding, “They (chocolatiers) are the genes of chocolate here who knows the end market, so let’s please work and learn together with them in this coming few days so that we can build a strong relationship between the growers and the consumers as well as with the chocolatiers especially in the boutique market.”

The PC also acknowledged East Sepik Governor for supporting the Programme since 2020.

Also present were parliamentarians representing electorates in the Sepik region namely Wewak, Nuku and Aitape-Lumi, as well as the provincial administrators of East and West Sepik, CEO of the Cocoa Board and his officers, and representatives from the National Department of Agriculture and Livestock.

Our very special guests who also participated in the opening ceremony and were greeted were 15 chocolatiers and cocoa niche marketers from Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Czech Republic, New Zealand and the United States of America (USA).

“We are so humble to have your presence here to boost our farmers morale whom we have been working with since 2020. Let’s work together, let’s gain trust, let’s build cocoa industry in Greater Sepik as well as in Papua New Guinea,” said Dr Rasaily.

Local partners supporting the commercial/processing of cocoa semi-products namely Port Moresby-based Queen Emma Chocolate company, Federice Estates in Wewak and Wilyete Cocoa Processing Ltd of Vanimo which has already commenced processing of cocoa semi products and chocolate were also acknowledged by the Programme Coordinator for the successful collaboration with the EU-STREIT PNG Programme.

The Governor of East Sepik and MPs for Wewak and Nuku during their speeches also acknowledged and thank EU-STREIT PNG Programme for advancing and realising the changes in the cocoa industry in the Sepik region and PNG.

One highlight of Monday’s exhibition was interaction between chocolatiers/judges with 59 finalists for the cocoa quality competition who received chocolates produced by Queen Emma Chocolate company from their samples. Farmers were explained the defects found in their samples and how they can improve in the fermentation and drying of their cocoa beans.

Judges also acknowledge the vast improvements found in this year’s cocoa samples totaling 370. “Unlike previous events, there has been a high improvement in this year’s samples where there is less smoke content in cocoa beans,” says chief judge Oonagh Browne,” adding, “It shows you have learned from past practices and this is a positive improvement for PNG cocoa.”

She also urges farmers to taste their own cocoa beans. “You must taste your own cocoa to know its quality before someone (consumer) tells you if they like it or not,” added Ms Browne founder of Weave Cacao.

The 3-day Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence & Trade Expo 2026 kicked off with field visits by 15 Chocolatiers/Niche Marketers to two farming sites supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) through the EU-STREIT PNG Programme in collaboration with Cocoa Board of PNG and Provincial Department of Agriculture and Livestock and local partners, in rural Maprik District, East Sepik Province on Monday 20 April.

Among the international cocoa visitors or friends is a national cocoa expert from the Queen Emma Chocolate company in PNG.

Farming sites visited were Muhian Cocoa Holdings and A1 Cooperative Society of Albinama Village, both located in the Balif area of Maprik District.

The visitors from Australia, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Czech Republic, New Zealand and the United States (USA) tasted some wet cocoa beans in well pruned cocoa blocks. They were also impressed with the taste of dried cocoa beans processed in the groups' new solar combination dryers provided with the support of the EU-STREIT PNG Programme.

Leading the visitors was Master Chocolatier Ms Oonagh Browne of Cacao Ambassador New Zealand, who is also heading the international judging panel for tasting of cocoa samples in the Greater Sepik Cocoa Excellence & Trade Expo.

“I’ve been here before and your cocoa is good. You produced good cocoa, but I urge you to taste your own cocoa as well. Only then you yourself can know the quality of your cocoa,” explains Ms Browne in her speech to cocoa families at the two farming sites.

It was a fun-filled visit and interaction where international cocoa visitors mingled freely and took part in traditional singing and dancing as well with women farmers and villagers.

The farming groups were selected by Ms Browne who had visited the sites in an earlier arrangement with the Programme in collaboration with the Cocoa Board, Provincial DAL and farmer groups.

Purpose of these field visits is to improve excellence in PNG Cocoa as well as bringing the market closer to the farmers.

Momentum continues to build as the countdown draws closer for the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence & Trade Expo 2026 to be held in Wewak, the heart of East Sepik Province, on 21-23 April.

A significant influx of visitors, including international cocoa experts, buyers and domestic tourists, are expected at the Sir Michael Thomas Somare Stadium, as farmers and agribusinesses prepare to showcase cocoa that meets global standards – grown locally and ready for new markets.

Among the visitors will be 15 international Boutique Chocolate companies mostly from European Union countries, namely Switzerland, France, Belgium, Italy and Netherlands, and also from USA and New Zealand. Potential chocolatiers and buyers from other countries are confirm their participation this week.

With high expectations that the event will further elevate the profile of PNG cocoa on the global stage, a total of 351 farmers/groups from all cocoa-growing provinces including new growth areas like Simbu have submitted their samples for pre-testing. The Cocoa Board of PNG (CBPNG) recently announced that 59 samples have qualified through a stringent sampling and testing process to the final round for charging by an international panel.

Farmers and cooperatives who do not make it into the top 50 will be provided with detailed feedback reports to help improve the quality of their cocoa production moving forward.

The National Cocoa of Excellence Show is a CBPNG cocoa promotion and marketing event which began in 2017. This year’s event is branded under the name ‘Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence & Trade Expo 2026’, and aims to promote the country’s fine-flavour cocoa and create pathways for local farmers to access premium specialty markets.

Winners will represent PNG at the International Cocoa of Excellence Show 2027 in France.

Stay tuned for more updates over coming days!

Don Bosco Technical Secondary School, a major educational facility in the provincial capital of Vanimo, was also visited last week by the EU Ambassador H.E. Erika Hasznos, in the company of government partners and stakeholders.

On Thursday, 26 March 2026, students put on a warm welcome, starting with a welcome song for the EU Ambassador, who visited the school with Deputy Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), Mr Michael Kumung, Provincial Administrator for West Sepik, Mr Jacob Areman, and EU-STREIT PNG officials.

The visit was an important moment for the school, which has about 800 students, most of whom are children of rural cocoa, vanilla and fisheries farmers supported by the EU-STREIT PNG Programme.
The school is supported with a Solar PV power system and ICT Resource Centre, which were officially inaugurated in 2024, through support from UNDP in Papua New Guinea and ITU under the European Union-funded EU-STREIT PNG Programme.

In her welcome speech, the EU Ambassador explained to students and teachers that the PGK 365 million contribution from the 27 member states of the European Union, the largest EU support to the Pacific, is helping support cocoa, vanilla and fisheries initiatives, including infrastructure development in East and West Sepik. “I’m excited to see many positive changes and impacts and hope when I come back in two to three years I can see good examples continue,” said H.E. Erika Hasznos.

Deputy Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), Mr Michael Kumung, said the technical support is a good example of how the school has seized this opportunity to reduce its operational costs. “Sometimes we want to build the big roads, etc., but these sorts of small things go a long way and make a lasting impact, and for institutions like Don Bosco, you are the future in terms of education,” said Mr Kumung.

The Digital Resource Centre serves more than 800 students as well as the surrounding agricultural community. Three trainings for farmers on e-agriculture have already been conducted at this facility, reaching 35 lead farmers. A training was also conducted on the sustainability of the resource centre.

Currently, Don Bosco is using the solar grid to power the resource centre, provide lighting to classrooms for students’ night study, and support the school canteen. Principal Mrs Majuna Chamilou said the school used to pay between PGK 3,000 and PGK 5,000 monthly for power and fuel. With the solar grid, the school now spends only between PGK 300 and PGK 500 per month on power and fuel.

She added that the savings of about PGK 4,500 go towards the school’s daily expenses, including an increased supply of stationery for students, as well as the service and maintenance of the resource centre and solar grid.

The European Union Delegation (EUD) to PNG headed by Ambassador H.E. Erika Hasznos visited Vanimo-Green District of West Sepik Province recently to see firsthand major achievements of the EU-STREIT PNG Programme.

The first visit on Wednesday 25 March was to a 16.7km Rawo-Leitre access road that connects 12,000 rural villagers in the Bewani Wutung Onei LLG.

In rural Sepik, access to opportunity starts with a rehabilitated road. Thanks to the International Labour Organizations (ILO) through EU-STREIT PNG programme, communities now have reliable access to markets, schools, and healthcare—fundamentals that unlock potential and improve livelihoods.

A ribbon cutting ceremony to officially opened the road was jointly performed by H.E. Erika Hasznos; Deputy Secretary for Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), Mr Michael Kumung; and Provincial Administrator (PA) for West Sepik Mr Jacob Areman.

During official speeches at Leitre village, the PA assured EU Ambassador that collaborative effort between government agencies will continue to ensure maintenance of the economic road after EU-STREIT PNG Programme.

OIC of EU-STREIT PNG Mr Atif Muhammad in his speech said the Rawo-Leitre road is more than just an infrastructure. It’s a bridge to progress, giving farmers better trade opportunities, students a safer journey to school, and families improved healthcare access. Every kilometre reopened is another step toward sustainable growth.
