Don Bosco Technical Secondary School, a major educational facility in the provincial capital of Vanimo, was also visited last week by the EU Ambassador H.E. Erika Hasznos, in the company of government partners and stakeholders.
On Thursday, 26 March 2026, students put on a warm welcome, starting with a welcome song for the EU Ambassador, who visited the school with Deputy Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), Mr Michael Kumung, Provincial Administrator for West Sepik, Mr Jacob Areman, and EU-STREIT PNG officials.
The visit was an important moment for the school, which has about 800 students, most of whom are children of rural cocoa, vanilla and fisheries farmers supported by the EU-STREIT PNG Programme.
The school is supported with a Solar PV power system and ICT Resource Centre, which were officially inaugurated in 2024, through support from UNDP in Papua New Guinea and ITU under the European Union-funded EU-STREIT PNG Programme.
In her welcome speech, the EU Ambassador explained to students and teachers that the PGK 365 million contribution from the 27 member states of the European Union, the largest EU support to the Pacific, is helping support cocoa, vanilla and fisheries initiatives, including infrastructure development in East and West Sepik. “I’m excited to see many positive changes and impacts and hope when I come back in two to three years I can see good examples continue,” said H.E. Erika Hasznos.
Deputy Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring (DNPM), Mr Michael Kumung, said the technical support is a good example of how the school has seized this opportunity to reduce its operational costs. “Sometimes we want to build the big roads, etc., but these sorts of small things go a long way and make a lasting impact, and for institutions like Don Bosco, you are the future in terms of education,” said Mr Kumung.
The Digital Resource Centre serves more than 800 students as well as the surrounding agricultural community. Three trainings for farmers on e-agriculture have already been conducted at this facility, reaching 35 lead farmers. A training was also conducted on the sustainability of the resource centre.
Currently, Don Bosco is using the solar grid to power the resource centre, provide lighting to classrooms for students’ night study, and support the school canteen. Principal Mrs Majuna Chamilou said the school used to pay between PGK 3,000 and PGK 5,000 monthly for power and fuel. With the solar grid, the school now spends only between PGK 300 and PGK 500 per month on power and fuel.
She added that the savings of about PGK 4,500 go towards the school’s daily expenses, including an increased supply of stationery for students, as well as the service and maintenance of the resource centre and solar grid.
