Urban Youth Employment Project Phase II - UYEP II Improving the capacity of participating youths to engage in productive income generating activities.

The National Capital District (NCD) Urban Youth Employment Project Phase II (UYEP 2) is an initiative of the PNG Government with loan funding from the World Bank. The UYEP II Project, approved on April 22, 2020, and declared effective on July 27, 2021, is being implemented in NCD by the National Capital District Commission (NCDC). The Project’s development objective is to improve the capacity of p

articipating young men and women in project areas to engage in productive income generating activities. The Project is inclusive of all youths, including those living with disability, and has a gender target of 50 percent females. The Project life is five years with a closing date of September 30, 2025. UYEP II comes at the back of a successful UYEP I from 2011 to 2019, which assisted over 18,500 youths improve their job-related skills as well as their prospects of finding employment.

From gaining new skills and confidence to creating pathways for employment and personal growth, these stories reflect the positive change made possible through UYEP II. 🌟 Creating pathways would not be possible without the ongoing support of our project partner, Colgate-Palmolive.

Today, we feature another inspiring UYEP II Trainee sharing her personal journey, experiences, and the impact the project has had on her life.

We are proud to share our second story from Ms. Theresa Mondo (Intake 14 Trainee), who through the Internship Program with UYEP II, has now secured a permanent role as Sales Admin with Colgate-Palmolive PNG.

"I heard about the project through our Community Mobiliser. After seeing that I showed interest, he helped me register and that’s how my journey started. During my ten days of Basic Essential Skills Training (BEST) and Urban Works & Services (UWS) I learnt a lot of new skills. I chose TVET first, but chose Internship in the last minute and thank goodness I did, because during my internship with Colgate-Palmolive, there was an opening in the Sales Department for a Sales Admin. With my prior experience and with assistance from Kimberly, Colgate-Palmolive took me on board. In five years from now, I see myself a step ahead from where I am now.”

🌟 Introducing the Testimonial Series! 🌟

As we approach the conclusion of the Urban Youth Employment Project II (UYEP II), we are taking time to celebrate the stories, achievements, and journeys of the young people whose lives have been impacted through the project.

Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing inspiring testimonials from participants across our various project components, highlighting their experiences, challenges, growth, and successes.

Each story is a reminder of the power of opportunity, skills development, and determination in shaping brighter futures. 💙💛

Today, we are proud to share our first story from Mr. Gideon Kepa (Intake 15 Trainee).

"At first I was schooling at PomNats, doing my Grade 12 this year (2024), but due to financial and health issues I had to leave school. When I heard about the project, I saw this as an opportunity to help me find work to support myself and my family at home. Urban Works has helped me gain hands on experience in civil works, and I have gained new skills, that I will be able to use in the future."
