“When you have a canoe, you can survive, you can go fishing, travel to the market, travel for free and support your own life, this is our tradition,” explains Sanakoli John. Justin and Sanakoli John are two of the most famous canoe sailors in Milne Bay Province, known for completing ‘The World’s First Circumnavigation of the Island of New Guinea in a Traditional Sailing Canoe’. This was a daring expedition covering 6300kms and 13 months at sea that aimed to promote the country internationally and inspire the youth of Papua New Guinea. An award winning book on the journey (Salt Water and Spear Tips) has been published and the documentary film SAILAU is on its way.
