On August 27, 2026, between 12:00 and 13:00 hours, a strong wind lasting approximately 5–10 minutes ripped off the roof of the newly built double classroom at Wadalei Primary School. This classroom was constructed under the development initiative of the Esa’ala District Development Authority (DDA) and current Member of Esa’ala, Hon. Jimmy Maladina.The incident occurred amidst a prolonged seven‑month dry season affecting Wadalei Ward and surrounding areas. Bushfires have been igniting across the district, damaging gardens, yam houses, and villages, further compounding the hardships faced by local communities.Ward Member Hon. Lindsay Sam and Primary School Board Chairman Mr. Elia Eric have raised their concerns publicly, appealing for immediate government and DDA intervention. They emphasized the urgency of addressing both the classroom damage and the wider environmental challenges threatening livelihoods.Acting Senior Teacher Mr. Daniel Manawadi, in the absence of Head Teacher Mr. David Mause, joined the Board Chairman in stressing the need for an immediate maintenance response. They warned that if the rainy season arrives before repairs are carried out, the entire building could be further compromised.In addition, Hon. Lindsay Sam highlighted the unserviceable Digicel network in Wadalei Ward, noting that reliable communication is critical during emergencies. To report the incident, both the Ward Member and the School Board Chairman arranged a dinghy trip on September 1, 2026, from Wadalei to Galeya, where Digicel coverage is available, to formally notify the Esa’ala DDA team.This occurrence underscores the vulnerability of rural infrastructure to extreme weather events and the pressing need for:Immediate classroom repairs before the onset of rains.Support for bushfire management to protect gardens and villages.Restoration of communication services to ensure timely reporting and coordination during crises.
