NEW ROAD RULES FROM TODAY (1 OCTOBER 2026)

There are some important changes to the way we share our roads, cycle lanes and footpaths from today.

The new rules include:

🚲 Children aged 12 and under can ride bikes on footpaths, with an older rider able to accompany them for safety. The new rule does not provide general permission for everyone to cycle on footpaths.

🚗 Drivers must leave at least 1.5 metres when passing cyclists, horse riders and other non-motor-vehicle road users travelling in the same direction and lane. On narrow or rural roads, there may not always be enough room to provide that distance safely. If you cannot pass safely, slow down and wait behind them until it is safe to do so.

🛴 E-scooters that are not considered motor vehicles can use cycle lanes.

🚌 On roads with speed limits of 60 km/h or less, road users must give way to buses pulling out from bus stops.

Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the new rules and help keep everyone safe on our roads.

COMMUNITY AND SPORTS GRANTS OPEN
(Don't wait to get your application in – you have just under two weeks)

Waimate District Council invites applications for financial assistance from clubs, groups, and organisations within the Waimate District. The Community Grant is currently funded at $60,000 per year, the Sports Grant at $10,000 per year and the Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund at $9,500. All have 2 funding rounds in a year.

⭐ Community Grant
This fund is open to any project that will benefit the local community. Increased funding means this grant can now support applications of any amount up to $10,000. Operational costs can be included in the application (excluding wages and salary).

⭐ Sports Grant
Eligible projects include coach or volunteer training, equipment purchase (excluding uniforms) and new initiatives or activities.

⭐ Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund
This fund provides a travel subsidy for sports clubs and schools competing in local sports competitions.
