Waikawa Marae

Waikawa Marae Mōu, Mōku, Mō ngā iwi katoa
For you, For me, For all In 1972 the land Waikawa Marae sits on was acquired through local authorities.

Waikawa Marae
In the 1950’s discussions were held with the Waikawa and Picton community about the need for a marae. In 1976 Trustees were appointed to for the marae under the Māori Affairs Act 1953. The original Trustees were James Hemi Elkington, William Te Toro Riwaka, George Te Oti Martin, Nancy Whanganui Riwaka and Gary Timms. In 1980 after a hui was held between the Minister of Māori Affairs,

Mr Ben Couch, and the community, the Waikawa Marae Management Committee was incorporated and work and fundraising for the marae started in earnest. In 1982 the first building was opened, it was the Whare Kai or dining hall. It was named “Whakakotahi” meaning one or united. After the Whare Kai was completed work started on the Whare Tupuna or the meeting house. This fully carved meeting house was completed in the mid 1980’s. Since then, Waikawa Marae has had small additions. A full make-over was completed in 2009 when the marae was the subject of a television show “DIY Marae”. It was a full on busy period with incredible help from all parts of the Marlborough community. As a result we have a wonderful, well used, fully appreciated marae available for all the community. He poroporoaki mō tētahi pou o tō tātou hapori 🖤

With deep sadness, we acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and staunch supporter, Hēmi te Hēmi.

Hēmi was a massive supporter of our community and a true driver for change — someone who believed deeply in the aspirations and dreams of our whānau Māori, ōtira whānau katoa across our community spaces. He had a rare gift of seeing the potential in others, always encouraging people to rise, to reach their greatness, and to be the very best versions of themselves. He stood beside many as a quiet strength, an advocate, and an unwavering supporter.

Through his role as an advisor with the Rātā Foundation, Hēmi helped open doors of opportunity for our marae and communities like ours. But beyond his professional contributions, it was his personal generosity, humility, and belief in people that left the deepest impact.

Kua hinga tētahi tōtara i te wao nui a Tāne.
A great tōtara has fallen in the forest of Tāne.

Hemi stood tall among us — steadfast, humble, and deeply rooted in his commitment to uplifting others. His presence, his wisdom, and his encouragement will be deeply missed.

We hold his whānau in our thoughts and send our aroha and deepest condolences during this time of loss.

Haere e te rangatira. Haere ki tua o te ārai.
May you ride freely into the distance, as you always loved to do.

Moe mai rā, e hoa. Moe mai rā.
