🚜🔥 It’s a busy time in our rural area🔥🚜

As tractors, harvesters, trucks and other machinery move into another busy time, we encourage everyone to take a little extra care on our rural roads. A few moments of patience can make a big difference in keeping everyone safe.

While you're getting machinery ready for the busy season, don't forget to check under bonnets, around engines, and in sheltered areas for bird nests and hay. Dry nesting material can create a serious fire risk.

✅ Check machinery thoroughly before use
✅ Remove nests, hay and debris from engine bays and moving parts
✅ Carry fire extinguishers
✅ Watch out for and give space to agricultural vehicles on our roads

Let's work together to keep our farms, roads, and community safe this season.

It's always “is your smoke alarm is working”, never “how is your smoke alarm?” 😔

This daylight saving weekend check in on your smoke alarms. Are they feeling energised? Are they looking a little dusty? Are they close to their use by date?

This is your friendly reminder to check your smoke alarms and give them some love this Spring ❤️

Thank you Awarua Trust ❤️

Supporting Those Who Serve Our Community 🚒

Earlier this year, the Tahuna Volunteer Fire Brigade welcomed a new First Response 4WD Ute to its fleet after a significant community fundraising and sponsorship effort.

The new 2026 Mitsubishi Triton will help the brigade respond more quickly and safely to medical emergencies, rural accidents, and off-road incidents across Tahuna and the surrounding districts, helping ensure support can reach those who need it most.

Awarua Trust was proud to support this project, which the Brigade described as the largest it has undertaken. The vehicle provides a reliable first response platform and allows crews to access locations that larger fire appliances often cannot.

We're pleased to have played a part in a project that will make a lasting difference to the safety and wellbeing of the Tahuna community.

🌼 Spring is Here! 🌼

With longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of jobs around the home, farm, and garden, now is a great time to refresh your fire safety habits.

If you're planning any outdoor burning, clearing vegetation, or undertaking activities that may create sparks, remember to check before you light.

Fire conditions can change quickly, even during spring. Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommends checking fire conditions and any restrictions through Check It's Alright before lighting an outdoor fire.

✅ Check local fire restrictions at www.checkitsalright.nz✅ Keep water or firefighting equipment nearby✅ Never leave a fire unattended✅ Ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving

While you're doing your spring clean, don't forget about your smoke alarms:

🏠 Test your smoke alarms regularly🏠 Replace batteries if required🏠 Keep alarms free from dust and cobwebs
A working smoke alarm provides the earliest warning of a fire and can save lives.

Let's work together to keep our homes, properties, and community safe this spring. 🚒🌸

A strong message here ❤️

We can clean up the shattered glass…
We can clean up the twisted metal…
And we can clean up the wreckage from the roads…
And we can reopen those roads and life returns to normal…
But we cannot clean up the heartbreak that is left behind.

Drive safe, drive to the conditions and look out for each other ❤️

Ever wondered why our fire siren still goes off?

All hours of the day and night… it’s still one of the most reliable ways to make sure our volunteers know they’re needed right now.

When someone calls 111, seconds count. There are pagers, apps, calls and texts - but tech isn’t perfect. Coverage drops, messages lag, things fail. The siren is the one backup that doesn’t.

And yes, it’s loud. Yes, it might cut into your day or wake you up. We totally understand.

But when that siren breaks through the noise or the quiet still of the night think about what’s happening in that very moment: someone nearby might be facing one of the worst moments of their life, and our firefighters are dropping dinner, stepping away from work, getting out of bed, or pausing family time to respond.

That sound means your community is on the move and helping each other.

🚨 Behind the Scenes 🚨

A bit of smoke, flashing lights, and a wool shed transformed into the scene of this week's training exercise!

This scenario focused on a HazChem incident, with crews responding to a simulated hazardous substance spill, a patient collapsed nearby, and a developing fire hazard. The red flashing lights marked the location of the "fire", while our trusty smoke machine helped create realistic conditions inside the shed.

These types of exercises give our firefighters the opportunity to practise scene assessment, hazard identification, patient care, and working safely around hazardous substances in a controlled environment before facing the real thing.

Another valuable training night!👨‍🚒🚒
