Today, as part of National Volunteer Week (NVW), we move on to our second district, BAY OF PLENTY as we recognise and celebrate all of our patrols and patrollers for their ongoing commitment to the communities they serve.

Their dedication, whether on weekdays, weekends, during the day or late at night, helps make our communities safer places to live, work, and visit. We thank every volunteer for the time, effort, and passion they contribute in supporting community safety and wellbeing.

Your service makes a real difference, and we are proud to acknowledge your commitment during National Volunteer Week.

If you’re getting ready to travel and your windscreen is foggy, here’s the fastest way to clear it:

• Turn your demister on.
• Turn your air conditioning to full strength at its hottest temperature.
• Turn circulating air off.
• Open the windows by a few centimetres, even if only for 20–30 seconds.

You should turn circulating air off because cold air from outside will clear fog faster than recirculated air in your car, which is already hot and has already absorbed some condensation.

In other words, cold and dry air is better than warm and moist air.

The circulating air symbol looks like a car with a U-shaped arrow in it – turn it off.

Opening the windows just a little will help clear the humid air inside, replacing it with colder air from outside. This speeds up the process a bit but it's a nice-to-have – sometimes it'll be raining, or just really cold outside.

If you’re not sure what your demister looks like, its symbol looks like three arrows pointing up at a curved rectangle. In most modern vehicles this symbol will be on a button you can turn on or off, but in older vehicles it may be a setting you need to select using a dial.

We've all seen people driving around with a foggy windscreen, and with foggy windows too. It's illegal to drive with a foggy windscreen (under section 8.8 of the Land Transport (Road User) Rule), so clear your windscreen and keep it clear as you’re travelling.

MYTH vs REALITY: Reporoa Community Patrol

Many people see our patrol vehicles around the Reporoa Rerewhakaaituand Waikite Valley areas, but not everyone understands what we do. Let's separate FACT from FICTION.

🔸 MYTH: "Community Patrol members are just volunteer police officers."
🔹 REALITY: We are not Police officers and we don't have Police powers. Our role is to observe, record, and report information directly to Police in real time. We are the extra eyes and ears that help keep our community safe.

🔸 MYTH: "Patrollers are just ‘wanna-be cops’."
🔹 REALITY: Our volunteers are not trying to replace Police - we support them. Community Patrol is about service, not authority. It’s about being present, observant, and responsible, and passing on accurate information so the right agencies can respond appropriately.

🔸 MYTH: "Community Patrols confront offenders."
🔹 REALITY: Safety comes first. Our volunteers are trained to observe and report, not intervene. We focus on gathering accurate information and ensuring it reaches the appropriate emergency services.

🔸 MYTH: "Driving around doesn't make a difference."
🔹 REALITY: A visible patrol presence can deter anti-social behaviour, vandalism, and opportunistic crime. More importantly, the information we report helps Police build intelligence and respond more effectively.

🔸 MYTH: "Community Patrol only works at night."
🔹 REALITY: Community Patrol operates both day and night, attends community events, supports emergency services when required, and patrols across our large local area.

🔸 MYTH: "The patrol is funded by the government."
🔹 REALITY: We are a charitable organisation powered by volunteers and supported through sponsorships, grants, and generous community donations.

🔸 MYTH: "Patrollers are all old, retired people - what are they going to do?"
🔹 REALITY: Our patrol is made up of people from all walks of life - working professionals, parents, and retirees. What matters isn’t age, its awareness, communication, and sound judgement. Can apply to from 18 years and above.

🔸 MYTH: "What difference are they making anyway?"
🔹 REALITY: The impact is often unseen but real. Patrols support Police with timely information, increase visible deterrence in key areas, and provide reassurance to the public during vulnerable moments. All patroller reports, when combined, help build a clearer picture of what is happening across the community.

🔸 MYTH: "One volunteer can't make a difference."
🔹 REALITY: Every patrol adds another set of eyes and ears. Together, our volunteers contribute thousands of hours each year helping to create safer neighbourhoods.

We had a fun afternoon with the Brownies and Guides this week! They enjoyed finding out more about the patrol, while also discovering how many students can fit into one car! 😆 Then they helped us with some community service by washing our two cars. They were pretty dirty to start with and they did a fantastic job!!! Thank you very much 🤩🤩
