A great day out at Queensgate!

We had a great time meeting so many people, having a chat and sharing what we love about Toastmasters.

We loved telling people about our club and what makes Toastmasters such a great place to learn, grow and connect with others.

We’re always happy to welcome new faces. Whether you want to:

Last meeting at Phoenix Petone Toastmasters was full of irony… and warmth 🤗!

Our Grammarian challenged us with the word “Ironic”, and we heard some wonderfully ironic stories from our members (true or not, they certainly gave us a lot of Wow and laughs!)

After a week of rain, wind and cold, it was especially lovely to spend the evening together with plenty of warmth, laughter and learning.

At Toastmasters, it’s about making great connections, sharing the things we love, and helping each other grow.

As Kath Cherrie, Area W7 Director spoke about her 'Sticky Learning' insights, we make the most progress when we learn practical tools and steps, and also, encourage each other along the way.

Sharing this as bird flu has been found in our neighourhood.

Biosecurity New Zealand says New Zealand is well prepared to respond and protect poultry production, and to reduce impacts on wildlife and communities.

Be alert and use good habits to limit the impact of bird flu.
• Keep your distance: Stay away from sick or dead wildlife. Keep pets away too.
• Keep clean: Wash your hands and clean your gear after being outdoors.
• Know when to report: If you see three or more sick or dead birds, report them to the exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66.

Biosecurity New Zealand is asking everyone to be alert after H5 bird flu was detected here in a single ocean-going seabird.

The bird was found on Petone Beach in the Wellington region, and testing confirmed H5 bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza).

This is the first detection of H5 bird flu in New Zealand. It hasn't been found in any other birds and there are no detections in poultry.

The whiteboard is a handy tool that sparks creativity.
It can be used in multiple ways:
- as a hanger for the club banner
- for the word of the day
- to welcome our guests
- to remind members of things
- to enhance speeches or evaluations. In this case, Linda used it for her evaluation of a speech about procrastination by drawing her version of The Panic Monster by Tim Urban https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU&t=416s
If your club doesn't have a whiteboard already, we strongly suggest you invest in one.

Matariki is a time of reflection and a celebration of the Māori new year. Phoenix Toastmasters recognises that holidays can be lonely for those who live alone or who have moved here from another city or country so we continue to hold our regular meetings.
Join us on Matariki Day, Friday 10th July 2026, 5.45pm to make some new friends, share stories, and have lots of laughs. Visitors warmly welcomed, no need to register.
