OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS

The Board of Trustees of Hiwinui School invites applications from ‘out of zone’ families who wish to enrol their child at Hiwinui School beginning in Term 3 or Term 4 2026.
The Board estimates there will be approximately 6 out-of-zone places available across Years 3-4 and Year 6-7 only. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within our school’s home zone.
Enrolments at Hiwinui School are governed by a enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our school website, or from the office. On our website you are welcome to download an ‘Out of Zone’ application form.
The deadline for receipt of applications for our out of zone placements is Noon Thursday 9th July 2026.
If the number of applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. The ballot will be held on Monday 13 July 2026. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot as soon as practicable following the ballot.

🌟 Volunteer Secretary Wanted – Join the Hiwinui Community Committee! 🌟

Want to make a real difference right here in Hiwinui?
We’re looking for a volunteer Secretary to join our dedicated Community Committee.

If you enjoy being organised and want to support the projects that make our area such a great place to live, this is a fantastic way to get involved. You’ll help prepare meeting agendas, record minutes at our monthly meetings, and be part of the team behind local initiatives — including the creation of our community footpaths and the exciting work to extend them.

If you’re keen to contribute to the future of Hiwinui and support the work happening in our community, we’d love to hear from you.

📧 Contact Committee Chair Rod Smilie to express your interest: [email protected]

If you were at our ANZAC service you would have heard the true story of Torty the Tortoise. A nice timely read!

A quiet surprise from Torty the 130+ year old tortoise 🐢

Yesterday on Anzac Day, we received this remarkable image from Torty’s family - the Littles. After several days buried away, ready for brumation, Torty unexpectedly emerged; awake on Anzac Day for the very first time. Her family say the unusual behaviour may be linked to shifting weather patterns.

Torty is regarded as Aotearoa New Zealand’s oldest living survivor of World War I, having been rescued by NZ soldier Stewart Little and brought home more than 100 years ago. Many have followed her story since she visited Te Papa last month, where she saw the Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War exhibition, and the replica of Torty that helps share her extraordinary journey.

A very special moment on a significant day. Torty’s rare appearance on Anzac Day offers a connection to a distant past, still present, still part of the story we continue to remember. Lest we forget.
