On Friday, in collaboration with Noaia, Road II Redemption, and Kai Connoisseurs, we held a working bee at Te Waka-a-Rangi cutting firewood and preparing spaces for calves and chickens ahead of spring. 🌱🔥🐄🐓

This was a beautiful collaboration of kaupapa, creating meaningful opportunities for tauira to gain valuable hands-on work experience while contributing back to the whenua and community.

A huge mihi to our Community Job Coaching rangatahi who stepped into Tuakana roles, mentoring and supporting Noaia tauira throughout the day. Your leadership, patience, and mana made a real impact. 💛

We’re also deeply grateful to the amazing team at Kai Connoisseurs for nourishing our tinana with beautiful kai, while also helping coordinate the day alongside Noaia and Road II Redemption.

To our MVPs... thank you for your hard mahi and dedication. It was a privilege to acknowledge your contribution with a small koha voucher in appreciation of the energy and commitment you brought to the kaupapa.

Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved in making the day such a success. This is what collaboration, whakawhanaungatanga, and collective growth looks like. ✨

🌿 Tūtaepatu Lagoon — te manawa o Tūhaitara Coastal Park

Tūtaepatu is the heart of Tūhaitara Coastal Park — a 49-hectare spring-fed lagoon and the largest area of natural open water in the coastal strip between the Waimakariri and Ashley Rakahuri rivers.

For Ngāi Tūāhuriri hapū, this place carries deep and layered significance. It has been a vital mahinga kai for over 300 years — tuna were its guardians, and generations of whānau from Tuahiwi gathered kai, cut harakeke, and maintained their connection to this place across centuries. It is also the resting place of tūpuna, making it a site of profound spiritual importance to the iwi.

Tūtaepatu was returned to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu as part of the Treaty settlement in the late 1990s after more than seven generations of persistent advocacy by Ngāi Tūāhuriri to reclaim what had always been theirs. Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust was established to restore and care for this taonga in partnership with Waimakariri District Council — and that work continues today.

Right now our team is actively planting native species throughout the lagoon margins, infilling areas of earlier plantings, and releasing plants and removing guards where they're no longer needed. Pest animal and pest plant control is ongoing, with contractors completing annual willow control to keep encroachment in check.

Every season we're building on what's come before
