🚨 Ever wondered why our fire siren still goes off? 🚨
Here’s the thing: it’s still one of the most reliable ways to make sure our volunteers know they’re needed right now.

When someone calls 111, every minute matters. We do get alerts through pagers, apps, calls and texts — but tech isn’t perfect. Coverage drops, messages lag, things fail. The siren is the one backup that doesn’t.

And yes, it’s loud. Yes, it might cut into your day or wake you up. We totally understand.

But when that siren breaks through the noise, think about what’s happening in that moment: someone nearby might be facing one of the worst moments of their life, and our firefighters are dropping dinner, stepping away from work, getting out of bed, or pausing family time to respond.

That sound means your community is on the move and helping each other.

And if you're heading out, take extra care on the roads and drive to the conditions. Black ice may be present, especially during frosty mornings and in shaded areas. Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that blends in with the road surface, making it almost impossible to spot and one of winter's sneakiest hazards.

🔥 Important Fireplace Safety Reminder 🔥

Good evening whānau,
With the colder temperatures now well and truly here, it's a great time to remind everyone about fireplace safety. Fireplaces are a fantastic way to keep warm during winter, but they also pose a serious fire risk if not managed properly.

✅ Remember:
• Have your chimney cleaned regularly to reduce the build-up of flammable creosote.
• Ashes can remain hot for many hours after the fire appears to be out.
• Hidden embers can stay alive for days and reignite unexpectedly.
• Always place ashes in a metal container with a fitted lid.
• Store ash containers well away from houses, sheds, decks, fences, and other combustible materials.
• Never dispose of ashes in plastic bins, cardboard boxes, or wheelie bins.
• Keep furniture, firewood, curtains, and other combustible items at least one metre away from the fireplace.
• Ensure working smoke alarms are installed and tested regularly.
• Never leave a fire unattended, especially before leaving home or going to bed.
• Use a fireguard if young children or pets are around.

🚒 A fireplace may look extinguished, but hot embers can easily start a fire long after the flames have disappeared. Taking a few extra precautions can help keep your family, home, and community safe this winter.

Celebration Alert 🚨
This weekend, Huntly Volunteer Fire Brigade competed in the UFBA National Road Crash Rescue Challenge, alongside 17 brigades from across the country. With highly advanced scenarios and increasingly complex entrapments, the competition was tougher than ever, but our team rose to the challenge in an incredible way.

Huntly proudly brought home:
•🥇 1st Place – Overall Trauma (Medical)
•🥇 1st Place – Best Medic Team
•🥇 1st Place – Entrapment
•🥇 1st Place – Controlled Rescue

And it didnt stop there, taking out the biggest award of the competition every brigade strives for

•🏆 1st Place – Overall Competition (New Zealand Safety Trophy)

This outstanding result reflects months of intense training, dedication, and skill-building by our crew.
A massive congratulations to the team—your hard work has paid off. You’ve made not only our brigade, but our entire community, incredibly proud. 👏

🚒🌟 A Very Special Milestone – 25 Years of Service (Gold Star) 🌟🚒

On Saturday night, Huntly Volunteer Fire Brigade celebrated a very special Milestone celebrating 25 years of service to Station Officer Adam Mcnamara.

25 years of service is not measured in time alone. A Gold Star represents missed moments with family and friends, countless callouts, dinners left cold on the table, and unwavering dedication to the community.

Throughout his 25 years of service, Adam has shown unwavering dedication, calm strength, and a consistent readiness to act. Standing beside his fellow firefighters, he has played a vital role in protecting lives, property and supporting the community.

Behind Adam’s 25 years with the Huntly Fire Brigade stands a family who have walked every step of the journey with him. A sincere thank you goes to Tammy, whose love, patience, and unwavering support have made his service possible. Together, they have made sacrifices, sharing Adam’s time with the brigade. This milestone belongs to them both.

Adam, thank you for your commitment, your loyalty, and the many ways you’ve supported this community and brigade over the years. Your 25 years (and counting) of service have left a strong legacy, and we are truly proud to stand with you as we celebrate this milestone.

🚨 Busy Training Night for Our Brigade 🚨
Last night our members were put through their paces across three separate scenarios:

1️⃣ Rescue Training
Our first crew tackled a realistic Motor Vehicle Crash (MVC) scenario involving two trapped patients.
•One patient was heavily trapped with serious injuries
•The vehicle had “collided” at speed with a tree and wall
•A large tree log was resting on top of the vehicle, adding extra complexity for the team to manage.

The team riding Huntly 327 (Rescue tender) completed this scenario and successfully extracted both patients from the vehicle and providing the necessary medical care until the patients were handed over to the Ambulance.

2️⃣ Training
Our second crew completed part of their scenario before they were dispatched to a real fire callout (Not part of training) They responded immediately to the callout and successfully extinguished the Fire.

3️⃣ Recruit Training
Meanwhile, our recruits continued building their foundations, working through multiple core tasks to develop the skills required to become firefighters.
Their dedication to training has been outstanding- showing up, pushing limits, and stepping outside their comfort zones to grow both personally and professionally.

👏 A huge effort from everyone involved. Training is completed to upskill and refresh on skills to ensure we can continue to keep our community safe.

The cyclone is expected to pass through with strong winds and heavy rainfall. Please secure or bring any loose outdoor items inside.

🚒 Emergency response:
Our crews are available 24/7 and will be responding as required.
📞 In an emergency, dial 111.

⏳ Due to the expected high number of call-outs, response times may be delayed while incidents are prioritised.

⚠️ Stay alert when travelling:
Expect hazards such as fallen trees, downed power lines, debris, and flooding.
🔌 Please also prepare for possible power and communication outages.

🏠 Stay safe:
Remain at home unless absolutely necessary and check on your family, neighbours, and friends. These events can be tough on everyone - look out for one another.
