There must be something good in the water (or the coffee☕) out here at the beach!

Cory Welch is our third brigade member to have hit the national news lately. Massive congrats to him. 👏

In a career pivot, Cory recently graduated from his apprenticeship as a refrigeration technician – landing him in the spotlight for a couple of radio and news features.

"After spending 25 years driving milk tankers and stock trucks across the lower North Island, in 2022 [Cory] made the courageous decision to start over, proving it's never too late to learn a trade."

Good on ya Cory. Leading the way bro. 👏

He's always had a connection to Foxton Beach, and recently moved here full-time from Pahiatua. So we've gained a fantastic senior firefighter and all-round top bloke. 🚒

Meet Foxton Beach's newest firefighter – Lucy Howard! 🚒

You may recognise Lucy from her lifeguarding with the Foxton Surf Life Saving Club, or her Coastal Clean window cleaning business, or just from around the neighbourhood.

She is an amazing asset to our brigade, always brings a big smile, a lot of energy, and a fresh way of looking at things.

Lucy, 18, has just returned from the week-long volunteer recruit course at the FENZ National Training Centre in Rotorua, officially swapping her green recruit helmet for a yellow firefighter one! 👩‍🚒🔥

We are extremely proud of Lucy and the hard work she has put in to get to this point. She is now our fifth active female operational firefighter here at the brigade – joining Katrina, Alana, Emma, and our DCFO Jaimee Brannigan.

A momentous occasion last night – Jaimee Brannigan has been appointed new Deputy Chief of Foxton Beach Volunteer Fire Brigade. This is well deserved and a fantastic achievement 👏🚒

If you know Jaimee, you'll know that you want her on your team. Staunchly loyal. Organised. Community focused. Keen to be first involved at any fire or emergency. Always keeping us on our toes at social engagements, and an integral part of the brigade since she joined in 2015.

Not to mention raising a young family with her partner Alex out here at the beach; alongside her day job with Emergency Services Horowhenua; and being well involved at the Manawatū Boating Club and many other things.

Also Jaimee is the first female to ever hold this role in the beach brigade since it began in 1935 – it only took 91 years! 😂😂

We asked some brigade members how they'd describe Jaimee............... :

"I would describe Jaimee as a natural leader and organiser, a lot of what she does happens behind the scenes. All the time she puts into planning and preparing for events or organising for the brigade."
"She is incredibly knowledgeable and approachable and genuinely wants to share that knowledge to help others. She is an absolute hard case, and brings a great mix of leadership, knowledge and fun to the team!!"
"She is dependable and always there when we need her. She is a person who genuinely cares about the team and community."
"Her leadership, commitment, dedication, calmness under pressure and willingness to support others make her a great choice for the role."
"She’s blunt and sassy haha (I’m sure she’d agree!), but very thoughtful and caring and you can always count on her when needed."

💨 Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items that could be blown around.
🌿 Check for loose branches and keep clear of trees during strong winds.

🌧️ Clear gutters and drains where it is safe to do so.
🚗 Take extra care on the roads and drive to the conditions.
📱 Keep up to date with the latest weather warnings and follow advice from local authorities and emergency services.

⚠️ Conditions can change quickly, so take a few minutes now to prepare.

Keep yourself, your whānau and your neighbours safe, and don't take unnecessary risks. 💙🚒
