Hungary, often seen as the EU’s “bad boy”, has dominated headlines over the past few weeks with corruption scandals, leaked recordings, and investigative reports into Budapest’s ties with Russia.

𝗜𝘀 𝗘𝗨-𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗽 𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗹𝗼𝗲𝗱𝘀𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻?

Of we het leuk vinden of niet, rauw machtsdenken is weer helemaal terug op het internationale toneel. Trump, Xi en Poetin willen de wereld het liefst opdelen in invloedssferen. Wat kan Europa hier tegenover zetten? En welke rol speelt EU-uitbreiding in een wereld die uiteenvalt in machtsblokken? En hoe wordt er in Nederland gedacht over deze nieuwe realiteit?

🌍 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝗠’𝘀 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆?

Maastricht University is reinforcing its profile as the European university of the Netherlands through its renewed Europe Strategy 2025-2030. Building on a strong foundation, the strategy sets out four ambitions for the coming years. Three build on areas where UM already has a strong track record: remaining a leader in European research, educating the Europeans of the future, and shaping European collaborative networks. The fourth, a new priority, focuses on close engagement with the policy world and builds on UM’s existing societal engagement.

Studio Europa Maastricht sat down with interim Rector Magnificus Jan Smits and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) Christine Neuhold to explore why the UM Europe Strategy and the new policy ambition matter at this point in time and how it builds on existing strengths across our university.

𝗡𝗶𝗲𝘂𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱: 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗼 𝗕𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘀

Niet lang nadat het Verdrag van Maastricht door de Europese Unie werd ondertekend, werd Theo Bovens in 1994 wethouder Sociale en Economische Zaken in Maastricht en locoburgemeester. In die rol moest hij zich voortdurend verplaatsen tussen de 'lokale' en de 'mondiale' buurten en evenementen in de stad. Sinds 13 juni 2022 is hij Senator en CDA-fractievoorzitter in de Eerste Kamer. Toch is hij nog regelmatig in Maastricht te vinden. Een stad die door 'mensen van buiten' als heel Europees wordt gezien. Maar hoe kan het toch dat de Maastrichtenaar dat gevoel vaak niet heeft?

Misogynistic statements like this are not only heard on the street — they are heard in the heart of Europe: in Brussels.

With our project 'Talk EU to Me', and this video with actress Julia van de Kar, we wanted to make that powerfully clear. Too often, female politicians are reduced to their gender. Comments are no longer about their arguments, policies, or expertise — but about their bodies, their emotions, their “suitability”.

Through Talk EU to Me, Studio Europa Maastricht brings research into public space — turning data into dialogue, and dialogue into awareness. Maxime Cabo is de tweede spreker die we aankondigen. Jong als ze is, heeft ze al veel werkervaring in de journalistiek. Hoe gaan we naar een samenleving waarin alles wat we gebruiken opnieuw wordt ingezet?

Op 24 februari kwamen zo’n tachtig Limburgers samen in duurzaamheidshuis Goede Morgen in Geleen om te praten over afval, hergebruik en de circulaire economie. In gesprekken tussen onder andere Limburgers, ondernemers, beleidsmakers en energiecoaches werden ervaringen gedeeld, drempels benoemd en concrete aanbevelingen geformuleerd voor gemeenten en provincie.

Van duurzaam diner tot interactieve workshops: de avond draaide om ontmoeting, uitwisseling en actie. Veel deelnemers ontdekten dat ze al duurzamer leven dan ze dachten — en dat kleine keuzes samen een grotere beweging vormen.

How do we move towards a society in which everything we use is reused?

On 24 February, around eighty Limburg residents gathered at sustainability hub Goede Morgen in Geleen to discuss waste, reuse and the circular economy. In conversations between residents, entrepreneurs, policymakers and energy coaches, experiences were shared, barriers identified and concrete recommendations formulated for municipalities and the province.

From a sustainable dinner to interactive workshops, the evening revolved around dialogue, exchange and action. Many participants discovered that they already live more sustainably than they realised — and that small choices together create a larger movement.

Zo’n tachtig Limburgers kwamen dinsdag in duurzaamheidshuis Goede Morgen in Geleen samen om te praten over alles rondom afval, hergebruik en de circulaire economie. Aan tafels met inwoners, ondernemers, beleidsmakers en energiecoaches werden ervaringen gedeeld, drempels benoemd en nieuwe ideeën bedacht.

De avond liet zien dat duurzaamheid niet alleen gaat over regels of technologie, maar over mensen: over gesprekken, bewustwording en kleine keuzes in het dagelijks leven. Veel deelnemers ontdekten dat ze al duurzamer leven dan ze dachten – én kregen inspiratie om nog een stap verder te gaan.
