The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI), with support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), successfully conducted a two-day training for 20 Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Ambassadors on Advocacy for Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in Kano State, Nigeria between 14th–15th October, 2026.

The training equipped participants with essential knowledge and practical skills in three key areas:

✅ Climate Action Plans: Strengthening participants’ capacity to develop and advocate for inclusive action plans that address the needs and priorities of persons with .

✅ Sensitisation Campaigns on Climate Change Impacts: Building to raise public awareness of the effects of climate change on persons with disabilities and promote inclusive climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.

✅ Disability Rights in Climate Action Policies: Enhancing participants’ understanding of disability rights and approaches to promote the integration of disability into climate policies, programmes, and decision-making processes in Kano State.

Through this initiative, the 20 PWD Ambassadors are better positioned to disability-inclusive climate action, mobilise their communities, engage relevant stakeholders, and advocate for that protect the rights and promote the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in climate governance.

On Saturday, 10th October 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) conducted a Validation Session on Baseline Study Findings on Employment Barriers, Workplace Discrimination, Challenges, and Gaps Affecting Youths with Disabilities in Kano State at Mambayya House, Kano State.

The session was organised under DPI’s project, Inclusive Work for Youths with Disabilities in Kano State, co-funded by the AU-EU Youth Lab

The validation session provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review the baseline study findings and ensure that they accurately reflect the lived and employment realities of youths with disabilities across Kano State, Nigeria.

Discussions focused on key issues, including:

🔹 Employment barriers affecting youths with disabilities.

🔹 Workplace and unequal employment opportunities.

🔹 Accessibility challenges in and employment services.

🔹 Policy and institutional gaps hindering inclusive .

🔹 Additional evidence, corrections, and to strengthen the final baseline study report.

The session aimed to ensure that the findings are accurate, evidence-based, and reflective of the experiences of with disabilities, while generating actionable recommendations to inform advocacy, policy engagement, and inclusive employment interventions.

Through this initiative, DPI reaffirms its commitment to promoting equal employment opportunities, accessible workplaces, non-discrimination, and the meaningful participation of youths with in the workforce.

Together, we can build a labour market where disability is not a barrier to decent , economic empowerment, and equal opportunities.

On 7th October 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) paid a visit to the Acting Provost of Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Legal Studies Kano-PR Unit, to congratulate him on his appointment and engage with the College on key issues affecting the inclusion of persons with disabilities.

DPI commended the Acting Provost for his commitment to inclusive , particularly his efforts toward establishing the Department of Special Education in the College.

During the engagement, presented a letter advocating for the provision of a sign language interpreter at the College. We are pleased that the Acting Provost approved the request and directed the Registrar to take the necessary steps toward employing a sign language interpreter for the College.

DPI also advocated for improved physical accessibility within the College, particularly to ensure that students with physical disabilities can move around the institution with greater ease and independence. The Acting Provost informed the DPI team that the College has commenced consideration of within its buildings. The College also expressed its commitment to providing hand-powered mobility tricycles at the gate to support students with physical disabilities in navigating the College premises more easily and independently.

In further support of the College’s accessibility efforts, DPI provided the College with a copy of the Accessibility 2023, which will serve as a reference in strengthening accessibility and ensuring that physical structures and facilities are more inclusive.

Another significant outcome of the engagement was the commitment to expand access to education for prospective students with disabilities. The Acting Provost requested DPI to submit the details of persons with interested in studying at the College, with a commitment that complimentary admission forms will be provided to eligible applicants.

Speaking during the , the Executive Director of DPI appreciated the Acting Provost for his openness and commitment to inclusion. He noted that more than 20 students with disabilities have so far gained admission into the College through DPI’s advocacy, with some of them already having graduated.

The Acting Provost also appreciated DPI’s contributions to advancing inclusive education, climate action, and for employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

DPI sincerely appreciates the leadership of Aminu Kano College of Islamic and Studies for its willingness to listen, respond, and take practical steps toward creating a more inclusive learning environment.

We look forward to continued collaboration with the College in advancing equal opportunities, accessibility, and meaningful of persons with disabilities.

🌍♿ Institutionalising Disability Inclusion into Climate Action in Kano State, Nigeria

On 30 September 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI), with support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), convened key stakeholders for a Policy Brief Development Session on Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in Kano State.

The session represents an important step in DPI’s ongoing efforts to ensure that persons with are meaningfully included in climate governance, policy , implementation and monitoring.

The development of the brief builds on findings from DPI’s baseline study, stakeholder dialogue session and review of the Kano State Climate Change Policy 2025. These processes examined the extent to which considerations are reflected in climate governance and across key priority sectors.

The review identified important gaps and opportunities for strengthening disability inclusion within action. The policy brief therefore seeks to translate these findings into practical, evidence-based and actionable recommendations for , policymakers, development partners, civil society organisations, private-sector actors and organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs).

🔑 KEY PRIORITIES FOR DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE CLIMATE ACTION

♿ Meaningful Participation and Representation:
Ensuring that persons with disabilities and OPDs participate meaningfully in climate policy development, decision-making, implementation and processes.

📢 Accessible Climate Information and Early-Warning Systems:
Making climate information, disaster-risk communication and early-warning systems accessible to people with different types of disabilities through appropriate formats, and communication channels.

🏗️ Accessible, Disability-Friendly and Climate-Resilient Infrastructure:
Promoting infrastructure and public facilities that are both climate-resilient and accessible to persons with disabilities, including during emergencies and .

📊 Disability-Disaggregated Climate Data:
Strengthening the collection, analysis and use of reliable data that captures the experiences, and needs of persons with disabilities in relation to climate change.

💰 Disability-Responsive Climate Financing and Budgeting:
Ensuring that climate financing, budgets and programmes incorporate disability inclusion and allocate resources to address faced by persons with disabilities in relation to climate change.

🌾 Climate-Resilient Livelihoods and Economic Opportunities:
Supporting persons with disabilities to adapt to climate-related impacts through inclusive livelihoods, skills development, entrepreneurship, social protection and access to opportunities.

🏥 Disability-Inclusive Climate and Health Planning:
Strengthening health and emergency preparedness systems to address the specific health that climate change may create or intensify for persons with disabilities.

📋 Monitoring, Accountability and Implementation:
Establishing clear responsibilities, indicators, mechanisms and accountability structures to ensure that disability-inclusive climate commitments translate into concrete action.

🌱 FROM RECOGNITION TO PARTICIPATION

Climate change does not affect everyone in the same way. Persons with disabilities may face additional barriers to accessing climate , emergency services, healthcare, livelihoods, infrastructure and programmes.

Therefore, disability inclusion must move beyond simply recognising persons with disabilities as a vulnerable or climate-affected .

Persons with disabilities must be recognised as rights-holders, contributors, decision-makers and agents of climate .

The policy brief development process provides an opportunity to strengthen among government institutions, OPDs, civil society, academia, development partners, communities and other to advance a climate response that is accessible, equitable, participatory and responsive to the realities of persons with disabilities.

🌍♿ Strengthening Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in Kano State, Nigeria.

On 24 September 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI), with support from the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), convened a Policy Review Session on the Kano State Climate Change Policy 2025.

The central aim of the session was to identify disability inclusion gaps in the policy and develop practical recommendations to strengthen the inclusion of persons with in climate action.

The review brought together of government MDAs, disability clusters, civil society organisations, media, academia and governance platforms to examine key areas including:

🔹 Recognition of persons with disabilities in climate policy
🔹 Meaningful participation of PWDs and OPDs in decision-making
🔹 Accessibility of climate information and early-warning systems
🔹 Disability-specific climate risks and vulnerabilities
🔹 Inclusive adaptation and mitigation measures
🔹 Implementation responsibilities and resources
🔹 Disability-disaggregated data, monitoring and accountability

The session provided an important platform for stakeholders to share perspectives, identify gaps and propose actionable measures for ensuring that climate and programmes are inclusive, accessible and responsive to the rights and needs of persons with disabilities.

The outcomes will contribute to DPI’s ongoing advocacy and the development of a Policy Brief on Disability Inclusion in Change Policies and Programmes in Kano State, Nigeria.

🌍 DISABILITY-INCLUSIVE CLIMATE ACTION: FROM EVIDENCE TO ACTION

On 10 September 2026, the Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) with support from Disability Rights Fund (DRF) convened a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Disability-Inclusive Climate Action in Kano State, Nigeria.

The session brought together representatives of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), government officials, media representatives, academia, community stakeholders, and climate experts to discuss the realities of and its impact on persons with disabilities.

📊 A key component of the event was the dissemination of the Baseline Study on the Impact of Climate Change on Persons with Disabilities in Kano State, Nigeria. The findings provided important evidence on the challenges experienced by PWDs, including the impacts of extreme heat, flooding, livelihoods, , access to climate information, disaster preparedness, and other climate-related .

💬 Through interactive discussions and experience-sharing, participants identified key gaps and explored practical solutions to strengthen , inclusive climate information and early-warning systems, disaster preparedness, policy implementation, and meaningful participation of in climate decision-making.

🤝 The dialogue also strengthened collaboration among stakeholders and generated recommendations for advancing inclusive, resilient, and disability-responsive action in Kano State.

♿ BREAKING BARRIERS: OPENING EXPORT OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Disability Projects Initiative (DPI) successfully mobilized 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to participate in a 1-Day Enlightenment Training on “Export Inclusiveness and Opportunities”, organized by the The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC). The event was held on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 at Kano Chamber of Commerce, Trade Fair Complex, Zoo Road, Kano State Nigeria.

The training provided an important platform for PWD participants to learn about Nigeria’s non-oil export , export procedures, documentation requirements, market access, and pathways for participating in the global economy.

A key technical session on Export Procedures and Documentation was delivered providing participants with practical knowledge on the requirements and processes involved in exporting goods and .

The programme also featured interactive discussions, stakeholder engagement, goodwill messages, and certificate presentation.
