EDUCATION UNDER SIEGE: HOW MANY MORE CHILDREN MUST PAY THE PRICE?
Behind every number in this report is a child whose classroom became a crime scene, whose dreams were interrupted and whose future was placed at risk.
From the heartbreaking abduction of the Chibok girls in 2014 to recent incidents across the country, school kidnappings have evolved from isolated tragedies into a persistent national crisis. Between 2014 and May 2026, 2,416 students were kidnapped across 26 documented attacks in 13 states of Nigeria.
These are not just statistics. They represent thousands of disrupted academic journeys, traumatized families, fearful communities and children forced to choose between education and safety.
The data reveals a troubling reality, while the Northwest remains the epicentre of the crisis, the threat has expanded beyond its traditional hotspots, affecting communities across different regions of the country. Every attack sends a dangerous message to children that school may not be safe and every child kept out of school because of fear is a loss to Nigeria's future.
At Building Nations Initiative (BNI), we believe that education should never be a dangerous pursuit. A Nation cannot build its future when its children are afraid to learn. Safe schools are not a luxury, they are a fundamental right.
Today, we call on:
1. Government at all levels to strengthen school security systems.
2. Security agencies to improve intelligence gathering, rapid response and protection of vulnerable communities.
3. Development partners and civil society organizations to invest in education protection initiatives.
4. Citizens to continue demanding accountability and prioritizing the safety of every child.
The cost of inaction is too high. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn in safety, dream without fear and pursue a future free from violence.
