World Bee Day 2026 🐝✨

Today JEWEL Environmental Initiative (JEI) joins the global community to celebrate World Bee Day 2026 under the official theme: "Bee Engaged with Youth." In the semi-arid landscapes of Gombe State, our young people hold the key to safeguarding these vital pollinators.

Why Bees & Youth Matter for Gombe
✅ Driving Agroforestry: Bees pollinate critical native trees like Parkia biglobosa (Locust Bean), and our youth are leading the charge by planting bee-friendly species in community woodlots.
✅ Securing Green Livelihoods: Through modern apiculture (beekeeping), JEI is equipping youth and student cohorts with sustainable skills that protect the Kanawa Forest Reserve while generating income.
✅ Fostering Eco-Guardians: with the significant support from the Gombe State Acresal , we are a engaging youth-led movements, raising a generation committed to stopping indiscriminate pesticide use through the use bio-Pesticides and preserving wild habitats.

When we engage the youth to protect the bees, we secure our food, our environment, and our future.

Bee together for the people and planet!

Rooting for Resilience: JEI Supports the "1000 Tree Planting Initiative" in Gombe

This Friday evening, JEWEL Environmental Initiative (JEI) was honored to participate in the official flag-off of “1000 Tree Planting Initiative in May,” an inspiring community project organized by Muhammad Isa Gaude. The event which took place at JIBWIS Bolari, along Maitama Sule Road in the Abuja Quarters of Gombe Metropolis.

This initiative has seen the light of the day to the power of partnership. We were honored to collaborate with fellow change-makers, including National Association of English and Literary Students (GSU Chapter), Garko Foundation, Youth Empowerment for Climate Action (YE-CAN), Eco-Climate Restoration Movement - ECReM and Gombe State Youth Parliament

As part of our unwavering commitment to landscape restoration and climate action, JEI gracefully donated a diverse variety of seedlings to support this cause, including Parkia biglobosa (Locust Bean) & Cassia senna for ecosystem stability, Moringa oleifera, Punica granatum (Pomegranate), and Carica papaya (Pawpaw) for nutritional and economic value.

Gombe State is currently facing the harsh realities of climate change, characterized by soaring temperatures, escalating erosion, and the effects of deforestation. Planting trees in the heart of our metropolis is a crucial step in creating "green lungs" for the city, reducing heat islands, and anchoring the soil against erosion.

At JEI, we are especially proud to support a sustainable youth-centered community initiative. We believe that when young leaders like Muhammad Isa Gaude take ownership of their environment, sustainable change becomes possible.

Our contribution goes beyond just "planting a tree." We are providing fruit-bearing and economically viable species like Pomegranate and Moringa, we are ensuring this project has a lasting economic impact, providing food security and potential livelihoods for the local community.

Through strong partnerships, JEI is building a greener, cooler, and more resilient Gombe. Beyond planting seedlings, we are sowing hope for a better tomorrow.

Let’s keep growing together!

Cultivating Conservation: Empowering the Next Generation at Kanawa Forest

At JEWEL Environmental Initiative (JEI), we believe that true conservation is built in the field. We recently had the privilege of hosting NESREA (ITF) students for a hands-on field trip at the Kanawa Forest Reserve.

This wasn't just a classroom visit—it was a day of action! Our team led the students through the essential techniques for sustainable plant propagation and reforestation

🌳 Mastering Propagation: From cutting and layering to advanced grafting and budding techniques, these students are now equipped with the technical skills to multiply and preserve native tree species.
🌳 Agroforestry in Action: We explored how integrating forestry with agriculture can boost food security while protecting our local soil health and biodiversity.
🌳 The Power of Kanawa: We highlighted the vital role Kanawa Forest Reserve plays as a sanctuary for local biodiversity. Understanding why we protect these spaces is the first step in ensuring they thrive for future generations.

JEWEL Environmental Initiatives believes that education is the most powerful tool for conservation. By bridging the gap between theory and field experience, we are ensuring that our environment is in capable, skilled, and passionate hands.

Beyond the Canopy: Unlocking the Secrets of Kanawa’s Fauna!

Following our recent field trip with the 300-level Zoology students from Gombe State University, the focus shifted from the treetops to the intricate lives of the creatures that call Kanawa Forest Reserve home.
At JEWEL Environmental Initiative, we believe that understanding the fauna, the animals is just as critical as protecting the flora. During our excursion, students took a deep dive into the behaviors that sustain our local wildlife
🐞 Habitat Dynamics: We explored the specialized niches within the reserve, from dense undergrowth to open clearings, identifying how different species select their shelter for protection and breeding.
🌱 The Food Web in Action: Students tracked signs of foraging and identified primary food sources within the ecosystem. Understanding what animals eat is key to managing the carrying capacity of our forest.
🐾 Behavioral Observations: By observing movement patterns and social behaviors, students gained insight into how species adapt to environmental changes and human presence.

Why this matter? A forest is more than just trees; it is a complex, breathing network. When we study the fauna, we are actually taking the pulse of the entire ecosystem. If the animals are thriving, the forest is healthy.
Seeing these budding zoologists analyze these habitats reminds us that the future of Gombe’s biodiversity is in capable, curious hands.

Join us in our mission to protect and document the hidden wonders of our local forests. Reach out to partner with us or learn more about our upcoming field programs!
