🌎 Paraguay and Moldova: closer than we might think?

At our October 22 meeting, we had the pleasure of welcoming George Teodorescu, Mixbook’s Regional Director in Moldova and Global Head of Risk and Compliance.

In his talk, “Echoes of Chișinău in Asunción: Economic Frontiers and Parallels Between Paraguay and Moldova,” George gave us an insight into Paraguay’s business environment, the opportunities it offers to international investors, and what makes the country an interesting place to explore for business and investment.

The discussion also revealed some unexpected parallels between Paraguay and Moldova, reminding us that looking beyond our own borders can offer fresh perspectives on our economy, our opportunities, and our place in the wider world.

🎓 How do we reform large systems?

On October 15, we welcomed Dr. Daniel P. Funeriu, scientist, former Romanian Minister of Education, Research, Youth and Sports, and former high-level EU adviser to the Government of Moldova.

Drawing on his experience in science and public leadership, Dr. Funeriu explored what it takes to reform complex institutions. The discussion focused on breaking large systems into manageable parts, understanding how incentives and established routines shape people's daily decisions, and ensuring that leadership and responsibilities are aligned.

One important takeaway was that reform is not just about changing structures or introducing new rules. For change to last, people need to understand its , see how it affects their work, and support the direction.

💜 How did millions of small donations help defeat polio?

On October 8, we had the pleasure of welcoming Don Hartline, a retired U.S. government analyst and manager with 38 years of experience, followed by international Peace Corps assignments, including in Moldova.

Don shared the story of the March of Dimes and how millions of small donations helped fund patient care and research that led to effective polio vaccines.

The discussion explored the power of clear goals, public trust, and collective action — values that remain at the heart of Rotary’s own fight to eradicate polio, launched through PolioPlus in 1985.

Friendship that brings countries together!

On October 1, we were happy to welcome eight members of Friendship Force clubs from Switzerland and Germany.

Hosted by the newly established Friendship Force Moldova club, led by our member Vlada Lisenco, our guests spent a week discovering Moldova — from its w**e traditions and cultural heritage to business, innovation, and beautiful landscapes.

On September 17, we had the pleasure of welcoming Olga Pavlic, Director of Mobile Financial Services and Business Innovation at Moldcell, for an interesting discussion on digital innovation and the future of financial services in Moldova.

With vast experience in technology and digital transformation, Olga shared the story of Moldcell’s journey into mobile financial services — a new direction that brings together telecommunications, technology, and finance.

We also had the opportunity to discuss what this transformation means for Moldova’s digital ecosystem and how technology continues to create new opportunities for customers and businesses.

🔐 Rotary Club Chișinău Cosmopolitan – September 24

How much of our everyday life exists online? And what would happen if we suddenly had to navigate the world without our digital identity?

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming Diana Farima, OSINT investigator and Founder of DCH, for a practical and eye-opening workshop on our digital footprints.

Diana showed us how much information about us can exist online and shared practical ways to better understand, track, and protect our digital presence.

The discussion was a good reminder that protecting our digital lives is no longer optional. Our data, reputation, money, and even our safety are increasingly connected to the digital world — and they deserve to be protected.

💛 Rotary Club Chișinău Cosmopolitan – September 10

On September 10, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Rodica Mindruta-Stratan, oncological surgeon, Associate Professor, and Coordinator of Moldova’s National Cancer Control Program.

Dr. Mindruta-Stratan gave us an inside perspective on how Moldova is working to prevent cancer, improve early detection, and make treatment and care more accessible across the country.

We had an open and honest discussion about the achievements in this important field, but also about the challenges that remain and the work still ahead.

What stayed with us most was the dedication of the doctors and teams working every day to improve cancer care and make quality programs more accessible to people across Moldova.

🙏 A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Mindruta-Stratan and her colleagues for their commitment. We wish you health, strength, and energy to continue this important mission.

🌱 Rotary Club Chișinău Cosmopolitan – September 3

We were happy to start our autumn season with Dr. Tim Durham and a conversation about GMOs — one of the topics that often raises more questions than answers.

Tim is a fifth-generation farmer and plant scientist. He shared his experience from both the field and academia, helping us look at genetic modification from different perspectives — as farmers, consumers, and members of society.

Tim also has a special connection to Rotary. He is a former Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar, having studied in New Zealand through Rotary.

🙏 Thank you, Tim, for sharing your knowledge and making the conversation so engaging.

We are looking forward to a very interesting autumn, with inspiring people, new ideas, and many good conversations along the way.
