WCDBS (Waterhouse Community Development Benevolent Society) is an umbrella organization of community based organizations, working together to become the main vehicle for decision making, planning and action on behalf of the residents and stakeholders in the Waterhouse Community. The WCDBS is a non-profit organization that was first established in 2000. It was legally registered in 2005 with the Department of Co-operatives and Friendly Societies (DCFS) as a benevolent society. The group comprises representatives from various community based organization such as: B.E.P.A Parenting Group, Parent for Change, 4ps (Parent for Peace, Progress and Prosperity, Mascow Parenting Group, Waterhouse Community Disaster Risk Management Group, St Patrick’s Rangers, Wailers Full Truth United Youth Club and Members of Different Faith Based Organizations.

Inner-city communities often experience significant health disparities, primarily due to limited access to adequate healthcare services. Residents in these areas are frequently forced to navigate a healthcare system that is either too costly, too far away, or simply insufficient to meet their needs. This lack of access leads to numerous preventable illnesses going untreated, chronic health conditions worsening, and overall poor health outcomes. As a result, the cycle of poverty is reinforced, as health issues often prevent individuals from securing or maintaining employment. Bridging the healthcare gap is essential for improving the quality of life in these communities, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to live healthier, more productive lives.

Economic barriers, such as persistently high unemployment rates and a severe lack of job opportunities, continue to plague inner-city communities throughout Jamaica. These conditions create a vicious cycle where many residents are unable to secure stable employment, further deepening poverty and limiting economic mobility. The scarcity of jobs not only impacts individuals and families but also stifles the growth of the entire community, making it harder to break free from socio-economic hardship. Addressing these structural barriers is critical to creating pathways out of poverty and fostering a sense of hope and progress within these underserved areas.
