Romualdo Locatelli and his art dynasty, from the family workshop to the collections of the East, from the Eternal City to the Island of the Gods
Romualdo Locatelli e la sua dinastia di artisti dalla bottega di famiglia alle collezioni d'Oriente. Romualdo Battista Federico Locatelli, internationally recognized as the most impetuous of the Locatelli family of artists, certainly thanks to his talent
but also to the mystery that surrounds his disappearance, was born on 4 April 1905 in Bergamo, a picturesque town with a strong artistic heritage. Within the ancient walls of this “Florence of the northern Italy” (according to Vittorio Sgarbi, editor of the last official monograph about the artist) the well-preserved monuments have always stimulated creativity while promising young artists have always received the support of rich and enthusiastic patrons. But the Locatelli family has given three generations of artists to Bergamo art city, starting from the nineteenth century. The first to make art his profession is Giuseppe Locatelli, forefather of two families: that of Luigi called Steenì II, father of Romualdo, Raffaello and Stefano, and that of Giovanni Battista, father of Luigi called Bigì, Ferruccio and Orfeo. The family environment was for all of them a stimulus to love and commitment to artistic activity, a push without patterns and constraints that allowed the nine Locatelli artists to freely and personally express their artistic spirit. Bergamo has dedicated several exhibitions over the years to some of the individual Locatelli. Daniela Locatelli, daughter of Raffaello Locatelli, 25 years after the death of her father, felt the need to dedicate a unique tribute to all the members of the Locatelli artistic workshop, bringing together all the family and friends in an organizing committee, from which the Cultural Association Amici dei Locatelli Sons of Art, which at 2022 has published four books and organized three exhibitions. Daniela Locatelli started researching her uncle Romualdo Locatelli in 1972, staying in Bali for several months and chasing traces of him. There she met some of his friends: his favourite model Tigah, the painter Don Antonio Blanco, Ni Pollok, the wife and model of the painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, and the Prince of Ubud. They told her about Romualdo, about his love for the Island of the Gods, and they took her to his home-cum-studio. They told her that since the 1940s Bali had not changed that much and so it still reflected the atmosphere her uncle had lived in. Research continues thanks to the Locatelli Art Association, but on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Romualdo Locatelli's first exhibition in the East, the official monograph about the artist has been released. The volume collects the fruits of over forty years of research. The curator Vittorio Sgarbi with the Locatelli family and the best collectors have selected only the best works. Romualdo Battista Federico Locatelli, internazionalmente riconosciuto come il più impetuoso dei Locatelli, grazie sicuramente al suo talento ma anche al mistero che avvolge la sua scomparsa, nasce il 4 aprile 1905 a Bergamo, pittoresca città d’arte, la “Firenze del nord Italia” secondo Vittorio Sgarbi, curatore dell'ultima monografia sull'artista, pubblicata da Skira (2019). All’interno delle antiche mura della città orobica, i monumenti ben conservati hanno sempre ispirato la creatività, mentre appassionati e facoltosi mecenati hanno sempre sostenuto giovani artisti promettenti, creando così la culla ideale per la nascita e la formazione di un pittore così impetuoso, audace ed emotivo. Ma la famiglia Locatelli di Bergamo ha regalato ben tre generazioni di artisti all’arte cittadina, a partire dal XIX secolo. Il primo a fare dell’arte il proprio mestiere è Giuseppe Locatelli, capostipite di due famiglie: quella di Luigi detto Steenì II, padre di Romualdo, Raffaello e Stefano, e quella di Giovanni Battista, padre di Luigi detto Bigì, Ferruccio e Orfeo. L’ambiente familiare è stato per tutti loro uno stimolo all’amore e all’impegno nell'attività artistica, una spinta senza schemi e costrizioni che ha permesso ai nove artisti Locatelli di esprimere liberamente ed in modo personale il proprio spirito artistico. Bergamo ha dedicato negli anni diverse esposizioni ad alcuni dei singoli Locatelli. Daniela, figlia di Raffaello Locatelli, a 25 anni dalla scomparsa del padre, ha sentito il bisogno di dedicare un tributo unico a tutti i membri della bottega artistica Locatelli, riunendo tutta la famiglia e gli amici in un comitato organizzativo, da cui nasce l’Associazione Culturale Amici dei Locatelli Figli d’Arte, che al 2022 ha pubblicato quattro libri ed organizzato tre mostre. Daniela locatelli ha iniziato a fare ricerche sul misteriosamente scomparso zio Romualdo Locatelli nel 1972, soggiornando a Bali per diversi mesi alla ricerca delle sue tracce. Ha incontrato alcuni dei suoi amici: la modella preferita Tigah, il pittore Don Antonio Blanco, Ni Pollok, moglie e modella del pittore Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, e il principe di Ubud. Le hanno parlato di lui e del suo amore per l’Isola degli Dei, e ha visto la sua casa-studio: le hanno detto che Bali non era molto cambiata dagli anni quaranta e rispecchiava l’atmosfera vissuta dallo zio. Le ricerche continuano grazie all'associazione, ma in occasione dell'80° anniversario della prima mostra di Romualdo Locatelli in Oriente, è uscita la monografia ufficiale sull'artista, che raccoglie i frutti di oltre quarant'anni di ricerche. Il curatore Vittorio Sgarbi con la famiglia Locatelli ed i migliori collezionisti hanno selezionato solo le migliori opere.
