The Summit was established as an initiative of the Gorbachev Foundation, supported by Nobel Peace Laureates and the City of Rome which hosted it from 1999 to 2007. Since 2008 the Summit has been held in a different country every year. The Summit is organized by the Permanent Secretariat which was created in 2006 as an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, with its own board. The Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates operates as a peacebuilder in different fields, enhanced by the knowledge and experiences of Nobel Peace Laureates.

On April 21, 1999, the very first World Summit of Nobel Laureates for Peac took place.

From that inaugural edition, the Summit has grown into one of the most significant international platforms for peace.

Each edition brings together Nobel Peace Prize laureates alongside leaders from the political, economic, spiritual, scientific, and cultural spheres.
Its mission has never changed: to turn messages of peace into concrete international proposals, and to address the most urgent challenges facing our world.

Behind the event, the vision of a man who had devoted his life to peace.
Founded by Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the USSR and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, the Summit was born to preserve and advance the legacy of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Rome, 1999. The room was extraordinary.

The first Summit brought together some of the most influential voices for peace of the 20th century:
F.W. de Klerk, Rigoberta Menchú, Shimon Peres, Joseph Rotblat, David Trimble, Betty Williams — Nobel Peace Laureates whose lives had already changed the course of history.

️The delegations were also received in a private audience by Pope John Paul II: a moment that set a precedent the Summit carries to this day.

And in 2026, the Summit returns to where it all began.
Rome.

Twenty editions. One mission and one city that holds the beginning and the milestone at once.

The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates congratulates Navanethem Pillay on this important recognition.

A distinguished jurist and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay has dedicated her career to the defence of human rights, accountability and the rule of international law.

Her commitment to justice and the protection of human dignity reflects a fundamental principle: there can be no lasting peace without justice, and no justice without respect for international law.

As we prepare for the 20th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, taking place in Rome under the theme “AI Journey for Peace: Algorethics, Agency, Futures”, we reaffirm the importance of upholding international law, protecting human rights and strengthening the institutions that make peaceful and just societies possible.

Congratulations to Navanethem Pillay on this recognition of her longstanding commitment to justice and human dignity.

Few people in modern history know what it takes to build peace as concretely as Juan Manuel Santos.
As President of Colombia, he led negotiations to end more than 50 years of civil war, one of the longest-running armed conflicts in the history of the Americas. When the peace agreement was put to a referendum, it was rejected. He pressed on anyway.
In 2016, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize not because the process was perfect, but because he refused to stop building.
A cathedral doesn't go up in a day. Neither does peace.

Born on August 4, 1961, the 44th President of the United States was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 — recognized for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.
His presidency reminded the world that words matter, that dialogue matters, and that leadership grounded in hope can shift the course of history.
Today we wish him a very happy birthday — and carry forward the belief he made famous: that change is always possible. 🕊️

Before he won the Nobel Peace Prize, Mohamed ElBaradei spent decades inspecting nuclear facilities, navigating the world's most dangerous diplomatic tensions, and standing firm when powerful governments wanted him to look the other way.
He knew better than almost anyone what insecurity really looks like — and what causes it.
And yet, after all of that, his conclusion was this: that the deepest security we can build has nothing to do with weapons or borders. It comes from recognizing what we already share.

Born in Cairo on June 17, 1942. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2005, jointly with the IAEA — honored for his efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes.

🕊️ Peace Quote of the Week
These words were spoken by Martti Ahtisaari in Oslo on December 10, 2008 — the night he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.
They weren't the words of an idealist. They were the words of a man who had spent over three decades in the room where conflicts actually get resolved — from Namibia to Kosovo to Aceh, Indonesia — and who knew, from lived experience, that peace is always possible when the will to pursue it is genuine.

Martti Ahtisaari passed away on October 16, 2023. But his conviction that no conflict is too entrenched, too complex, or too old to be solved lives on in every peace process that continues in his name.
