Years of drought, rapid urbanisation and excessive groundwater extraction have pushed the city towards a water crisis.

During Pitru Paksha, offerings such as ๐จ๐ข๐ฅ, ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฅ๐ค, ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ, ๐ฌ๐ฐ๐ž๐ž๐ญ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž enter the tank.
The additional organic load can reduce dissolved oxygen, creating conditions that are harmful to fish.

Bringing Nature Back to Sidipur Lake

A floating wetland can start the restoration process, but the community is what can sustain it.
At Sidipur Lake, in collaboration with an NGO, we installed a 3m ร— 2.5m floating wetland planted with Red Canna.
It was to ensure that excess nutrients get absorbed and that it improves water quality.

What has been especially encouraging is seeing the village community take ownership.
They are continuing to maintain the wetland plants and, importantly, are helping ensure that people do not dump waste or pollute the waterbody.
This is what sustainable waterbody restoration should look like when technology is supported by nature, and restoration is supported by the community.

One intervention can improve a lake. Community ownership can protect it for years.

Ganpati Visarjan is a deeply meaningful tradition for millions of devotees.
But what happens to our lakes and rivers after the celebrations?

Idols made with Plaster of Paris, synthetic paints and chemical coatings can affect water quality and aquatic ecosystems.

Indiaโ€™s Water Bodies Census has helped us understand the scale of our water resources.
The first census identified over 24 lakh waterbodies across the country.

One idea we are exploring at Clean-Water is floating farming, using suitable floating platforms to grow plants while also supporting the ecological health of the waterbody.
Floating farming can provide an additional livelihood, while plants can also help take up excess nutrients from the water.

The opportunity is to look at waterbodies not just as places to store water, but as living ecosystems that can support communities, biodiversity and local livelihoods.
With the right design, monitoring and water-quality management, floating farming could become one more tool in the larger journey of waterbody rejuvenation in India.
