Dima Hasao Thadou Facts :
1. Dima Hasao district has the institution of Thadou Mauzadar dating back to 1886, recognized under the district’s revenue system. This proves Thadou’s official organized presence in Dima Hasao for over 130 years.

2. In Dima Hasao, Thadou-speaking clans and families traditionally owned Thadou as their identity. Among native speakers, there was no rejection of the Thadou name in the past. Language and tribe were understood as one.

3. Following internal division within the community in the early 1970s, the Thadou Students’ Organisation (TSO) was established in 1975 as the first Thadou students’ body. It was formed to protect Thadou language, culture, education and identity during a critical period of fragmentation. Around the 1990s, TSO was renamed to Thadou Students’ Association (TSA).

Election of THADOU MAUZADAR 2026

Thadou Inpi Assam (TIA) successfully conducted the election for Thadou Mauzadar on 27th June 2026 at Khomunnom, Mahur, Dima Hasao District, Assam.
The election was held in the presence of 51 representatives from the Thadou Inpi Dima Hasao (TID), Thadou Students’ Association (TSA), Thadou Women Association (TWA) and Thadou Gaon Buras (GBs). Following deliberations, Pu Henlun Sitlhou of Songbung village, Mahur, a committed and hardcore Thadou was elected as the new Thadou Mauzadar for a new term of five years.

He succeeds Pu Lenjang Chongloi who served with distinction as Thadou Mauzadar from 2013 to 2026. TIA expresses sincere appreciation to Pu Lenjang Chongloi for his dedicated service to the Thadous. The programme commenced with prayer by Rev. Ashei Sitlhou, TBA Assam and concluded with a feast.

Thadou Mauza, established in 1886 under the British administration continues to function and remains one of the oldest and most prominent mauzas in the district.

We congratulate Pu Henlun Sitlhou and wish him success in his service to the Thadou tribe.
March forward, Thadou.

SAIPIKHUP PUON
Saipi = Elephant, khup = knee.
The story says that when elephants rested, their knees left deep imprints in the ground and women who saw these marks traced the pattern and wove it to create the shawl.
Because the design came from such a powerful animal and took great skill to weave, Saipikhup became a symbol of honor and is still presented to VIPs and honored guests today as a mark of the highest respect.
Today, weavers adapt Saipikhup for each era with new colors and styles.
The shawl isn’t limited to the Thadou alone, other Zo tribes also weave it with slight variations, but the core story stays the same, connecting the Zo people through shared art and roots.

For those who say Thadou is just a clan:

1. The Abraham-Judah-Thadou principle:
Israelites all came from Abraham, Abraham to Jacob is 3 generations: Abraham → Isaac → Jacob, yet were never called "Abraham tribe." They became 12 tribes named after Jacob’s sons & Judah was his 4th son, not eldest, but Judah became the name that represented the whole southern kingdom and later all Jews. God Himself used one son’s name for the entire people. Like Israel’s Judah, even if you say Thadou was the youngest among clans, tribe formation doesn’t matter young or old like Judah tribe.

2. Tribe recognition is by language, not by birth:
India does not recognize tribes by genealogy or who was born first. The Constitution’s criteria are: distinct language, culture, customs, and geographical isolation not birth order, not who was eldest or youngest. Even if you say Thadou is a clan, tribe formation is not by young or old but by language and culture.
For those speaking Thadou language, there is no door to walk away from Thadou. So, for unity like in the past, all must come back to the original one.

3.Unity broken by fake teachings since 1970s:
Until the early 1970s there was one name, one ST list, one political voice. Then new preachers taught "Thadou is only a clan, not the tribe" and pushed other names like Kuki, Manmasi, etc. inplace of Thadou.

Jeroboam was the first king of the northern kingdom after Israel split in 931 BC. He feared that if his people kept going to Jerusalem(Southern Kingdom) to worship, they would reunite with Judah and he would lose power (1 Kings 12:26-27). Just to gain power, Jeroboam brought his people to worship idols, so that his people didn’t need to go to Jerusalem. By doing that Jeroboam sinned against God (1 Kings 12:30).

So like Jeroboam, it is just for power that some leaders are preaching false propaganda so that the once united Thadou people should not unite. They create new stories, new names, and new loyalties to keep people divided. The people, the language, and the customs stay the same.

So people believing the long false propaganda of some leaders, it’s time to wake up. For 50+ years the same lie has been repeated : “Thadou is just a clan.” Repetition doesn’t make it true. Language, culture, customs, legal recognition nothing changed except the teaching.
