A roof takes more sun than any other part of a building — gaining the most heat through the day, losing the most at night.

Mudroll sits right there, between rafter and roof covering: soil, jute and straw, rolled and pressed by hand, doing the quiet work of slowing that heat down.

Used across flat and sloping roofs alike, in different projects, shaped a little differently each time.

Parul University students spent a day at Sankalan, trading classroom walls for open grounds. They got their hands into the mix, learning traditional building techniques directly from Sankalan's master artisans, and left with a new perspective on how sustainable architecture actually comes together. From mixing earth to moulding it, this was learning built from the ground up.

At Murda Eco Village, the idea was simple: bring a familiar way of cooking into a shared community space—without changing the way people cook.

Inspired by the simplicity and grounded way of living associated with Bapu Kutir at Sevagram Ashram, Wardha, the space brings together familiar practices, materials and cooking traditions, reinterpreted for a contemporary setting.

At its heart is the smokeless chulha, also known as the Magan Chulha. A chimney draws smoke away from the fire and carries it outside, while the form and proportions of the chulha respond to the movement of air, heat and smoke.

Committing to an unknown material and technique was made easy for our client by converting a mock-up into a functional space “Gaushala” which they could experience first-hand.

Some conversations stay with you long after they end.

Today, a conversation with Ar. Prof. Neelkanth Chhaya, former Dean, Faculty of Architecture, CEPT University, began with architecture and wandered into something much larger — how we perceive life, community, music and ourselves.

We spoke about the Indian idea of being “not finite” — of abundance, openness and spaces that make room for people. About opinions, which may give us conclusions but not always certainty. And about music — rhythm, pauses, mass and void, structure and freedom — and how all of these can find their way into architecture.

He spoke about Hindustani and Carnatic classical music, and left us with a simple challenge: listen to jazz.

Perhaps the most valuable part of the conversation was not what we learned about architecture, but the questions it left us with about being human.

Some conversations don’t give you answers. They change the way you look at the questions.
