In Khanapur, the response to the floods wasn't just relief — it was skill. Families were brought into the process of building their own homes, learning the craft of compressed stabilised earth block production from the ground up. Under the guidance of Mr. Tejas Kotak and So-Haath Hundred Hands, rebuilding became an act of empowerment.

Comprehensive soil testing for earthen construction ensures every project begins with precision and reliability. At Sankalan, soil samples collected near the project site are analysed in a well-equipped laboratory to guide informed material decisions from the outset. This systematic approach to soil testing for stabilised and unstabilised earthen construction helps determine optimal material mixes and ensures structural stability. By prioritising site-specific soil analysis and rigorous testing protocols, we enable the development of durable, sustainable earthen architecture grounded in scientific precision.

Rehabilitation is not reconstruction. In the flood-affected villages of Ravangaon and Hasnal, Maharashtra, Sankalan is working with communities to design and build housing that is safe, low-cost, and deeply rooted in how people live. In partnership with Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal, this project redefines what it means to rebuild by combining traditional construction knowledge with improved practices andcommunity participation to strengthen communities from the ground up.

The Foundation Batch of B.Arch at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, visited Sankalan, a space where traditional construction techniques intersect with contemporary architectural education.

The experience offered hands-on exposure to stabilised earthen construction, lime-based finishes, and time-tested building methods. It reinforced a fundamental idea: designing sustainably is as vital as understanding how a structure is built.

At Sankalan, we believe the brief doesn't end at design. For Mruda Eco Village, we took the furniture from concept to completion with in-house design, locally sourced wood, and a artisan team that understood the project's values from day one.

Students across age groups were introduced to the ideas, materials, and thinking behind earthen construction. This included 3rd Grade students from Rajkot (110 students), 9th Grade students from Bangalore (70 students), and architecture students from Bharatiya Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune (46 students). These training sessions are designed to offer students a chance to observe, ask questions, and begin noticing how buildings take shape through material, process, and context.
