🌱 Indigenous Livestock Conservation Gets a Boost! 🐂🐏

10 new indigenous livestock breeds have been registered by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) - a significant step in ensuring the conservation of traditional livestock and the communities that sustain them.

For years, pastoralists have played a crucial role in maintaining indigenous breeds, which are resilient to climate change and integral to sustainable livelihoods. At Sahjeevan, we actively work with pastoral communities to document, conserve, and secure recognition for unique breeds like the Banni Buffalo, Kharai Camel, and Panchali Sheep.

👏 This milestone supports our policy advocacy for mission-mode livestock registration, ensuring that indigenous knowledge and biodiversity remain protected for future generations.

📢 Did you know?
Despite Gujarat being the third-largest wool-producing state in India 🐑, shepherds earn zero revenue from wool due to a lack of processing facilities and demand.

🚨 Without a market, indigenous breeds like Patanwadi & Marwari are vanishing!

Sahjeevan is stepping up with the Revival of Sheep Wool Value Chain initiative – building a sustainable system that ensures fair pricing, market access, and better livelihoods for shepherds. 🌿✨

📍 Gugaliyana Village, Surendranagar
🌿 People, Pastoralism & Wildlife
For centuries, the pastoralists of Gugaliyana have shared their lands with diverse wildlife. Over the last four years, we've been working with them on livestock healthcare, wool shearing, and community organizing through the Surendranagar Gheta Bakra Ucherak Maldhari Sangathan (SGBUMS).

In 2023, through the JI Thaker Fellowship, we expanded this effort to document the biodiversity of Gugaliyana and its traditional ecological knowledge. This led to our camera trapping study in Gugaliyana Reserved Forest, which captured species like the Indian grey wolf, striped hyena, and leopard.

This January, we met with 120+ community members at Gugaliyana Primary School to:
- Share our camera trap findings—including lesser-known species like the small Indian civet & golden jackal
- Distinguish wolves from jackals—a common mix-up in local folklore
- Discuss the Indian star tortoise—challenging myths and misconceptions
- Spread awareness about the Forest Department's livestock compensation scheme

= The session ended with community members sharing their own knowledge & stories of the wild—reminding us that conservation is most powerful when built on local wisdom & lived experience. 🌏

Grateful for the support of The Habitats Trust & Rainmatter Foundation for enabling this work! 🙌

✨ Bird Ringing ✨ Unlocking Secrets of Migration and Survival

In 1889, Danish teacher and ornithologist H.C. Cornelius Mortensen introduced bird ringing, a revolutionary method for studying birds. By attaching uniquely numbered rings to birds, researchers gain incredible insights into their lives.

Why is bird ringing so important?
🔸 To identify each bird individually
🔸 To study migration routes & patterns
🔸 To understand survival and life cycles
🔸 To learn about bird behavior
🔸 To uncover orientation and navigation strategies
🔸 To observe micro-evolution

Bird ringing has helped us understand the incredible journeys of birds like Saigyn, the demoiselle crane spotted in Kutch. Such efforts are essential to conserving habitats and ensuring the survival of migratory birds 🌿
