Well done to Lobby for a Public Swimming Pool for Lucan, Co. Dublin who successfully campaigned for a new pool for Lucan which is opening this week.

It has been 12 years since the Lucan pool lobby group was formed.

Mullingar Pool Action Group is almost 4 years old now. If funding is granted for the proposed new swimming pool in the Mullingar Regional Sports Centre it will pave the way for this much needed facility in our community which will have the capacity and facilities to meet the growing population of the greater Mullingar area .

The Irish Times contains an interesting article today on the decline of public swimming pools in Ireland.

β€œA report published by Swim Ireland last December said that at least a quarter of the swimming pools in the State are more than 35 years old and coming to the end of their lifespan.”

The current Mullingar public swimming pool has been in operation since the early 1970’s and continues to serve our community brilliantly as it has done over the last 50+ years.

However the town’s population and needs have grown significantly since then and the proposed development of the new fit for purpose swimming pool as part of the new Mullingar Regional Sports Centre in Blackhall will be a much welcome and necessary addition to the community.

The decision by Westmeath County Council to grant full part 8 planning permission for the proposed new pool and sports complex has been a very welcome step forward in the pool project.

Mullingar Pool Action Group look forward to continuing to work with our local TDs, Westmeath County Council and the wider community to keep this project to the fore and ensure that it continues to progress.

πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰ We got planning!! πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

For the past three years, as a community group we have worked extremely hard in highlighting the need and advocating for a new swimming pool to serve the greater Mullingar community as a whole.

We are delighted to see that full Part 8 planning has been granted to Westmeath County Council to commence the tendering for and ultimately construction of the new swimming pool πŸ—οΈ.

Getting to this point has seen so many people within Mullingar working hard and giving their time and energy to the project. In many ways the real work starts now but it’s important to thank the elected members of the council, our local politicians and WCC in getting to this stage.
