Braving the weather going up on Loughanleagh mountain to start learning how to use a compass finding north. The views are always breathtaking up there.

Beaver Survival Challenge 2026.
Massive thank you to 6th Cavan, Kingscourt Scout Group for welcoming us to this annual event at their Kingscourt scout den!
Building a campfire πŸ”₯, making a water filter πŸ’§ using sand, gravel and an upturned plastic bottle, plant identification 🌿, tarps for shelter ⛺️, an obstacle course 🎒, team work on their mini clan motto and flag, and of course making lunch πŸ₯ͺ.
It was a fantastic day of adventure, learning and friendship! 🀩

When it's nice and hot outside, why not start a fire? β™¨οΈπŸ˜…
Safety around fire making is of utmost importance in the woods ☝️⚠️, especially now when everything is dry.
Stable ground, clearance above and around, fire-extinguishing material on stand-by.
The children did great πŸ‘ and enjoyed marshmallows and biscuits.

Really making the forest our base now.
The children learned that you don't need a pen to make markings on paper - sticks, leaves, flowers all work, too! 🌿☘️πŸͺΎπŸͺ»πŸŒΈ

Then a short walk to find a good spot for more knots. Challenge was to make a ladder with at least two sticks. They all gave it their best, well done everyone!

A nature treasure hunt πŸŒΏπŸƒπŸ by the castle lake today, but from the other side. Just to realise that every tree has their own unique shape of leaf and what they look like. It was quite a decent walk, too!

Bivvies part 2. The children really wanted to improve their structures, trying to make it as closed up as possible, using more sticks, sheets of moss, and well, why not add some lovely bluebells for decoration.
We also reviewed the basic clove hitch knot and simple lashings to make stick men.

What a fantastic bivvy building session we had today! The beavers and cubs both built their own bases from completely different starting points. True team work πŸ’ͺ🌲🌳πŸͺΎ, lifting long and heavy branches and telling each other which way to go and where to put them. Great job.

Orienteering! Being able to read a map πŸ—ΊπŸ§ is a vital skill for our budding scouts. The children had to identify their starting point and follow a route with 11 not-so-obvious landmarks for guidance. We finished off the session with a good old relay race to steam off the rain that caught us towards the end.

What a fabulous hike we had today at Loughanlea⛰️!
Following the blue trail nearly all the way across the mountain, the kids enjoyed the fabulous view and a well deserved picnic break including hot chocolate 🍫 of course. No hike along a forest would be complete without the kids running off to find sticks, and bigger sticks, and better sticks. And rocks. Rocks are also important.
The weather stayed mostly favourable apart from one enormous shower, but a good scout has the right rain gear on and no one got wet πŸ˜β˜”οΈ
