Community & Stakeholder Engagement: Reefs thrive where people unite

What does coral restoration really look like on the ground?
Starting May 18th, the Coral Connect invites you into a brand new storytelling experience 🎥

Throughout this educational programme, we follow Nancy, local manager of the REEL Project at in Kenya 🇰🇪, as she navigates the real-life challenges of engaging communities, tourism actors, authorities, fishers and more.

Learn directly from practitioners, tourism professionals, local authorities and restoration actors from around the world — and continue the conversation by asking them questions in our community spaces.

🧩 Expect hands-on activities, real-world scenarios, stakeholder mapping exercises, and practical tools you can apply to your own projects.

Beneath the surface, nothing stands still.

Everything wears down, everything evolves.
From 33 metres deep, our nurseries are constantly at work…

Currents, salt, marine life: over time, the structures begin to deteriorate. The metal weakens, organisms settle in, take up space, add weight… and make it harder for corals to grow in healthy conditions.

So, at regular intervals, a large-scale operation is set in motion.
🚤 A new nursery is first carefully lowered using lift bags and underwater scooters, then secured to the seabed.
🪸 Divers then transfer the corals, one by one, onto this new structure so they can continue to grow.
⬆️ The old nursery, now empty, is attached to lift bags and slowly brought back up while the team begins their decompression. At the surface, it is recovered and taken back to shore.
🔧 A second phase then begins: cleaning, replacing the mesh, reinforcing the structure… everything is restored and made ready to return underwater.

A precise, technical… and essential operation.
At Punta de la Mona, our partner .soul has recently brought nursery no. 2 back to life at a depth of 33 metres.

Behind every coral that grows, there are hours of preparation, coordination, and human expertise.

🪸 Restoring a reef isn’t just about planting corals.
It’s about maintaining, repairing… and supporting nature as it rebuilds itself.

🪸 What if winter was actually corals’ favourite season?

At Punta de la Mona in Spain, corals take advantage of cool, nutrient-rich waters to feed, grow stronger… and bounce back.

These are the ideal conditions for our partner .soul to take action:
👉 Since the beginning of the year, 60 corals have been restored in nurseries, at depths of 30 to 36 metres.
👉 And already, 30 fragments have been replanted onto the reef, on coralligenous seabeds.

Winter is in fact a key period for reef survival in the Mediterranean.

And behind every restored coral, there’s you.

🪸 Et si l’hiver était en réalité la saison préférée des coraux ?

À la Punta de la Mona, en Espagne, les coraux profitent des eaux froides pleines de nutriments pour se nourrir, se renforcer… et repartir de plus belle.

C’est dans ces conditions idéales que notre partenaire Coral Soul agit :
👉 Depuis le début de l’année, 60 coraux ont été restaurés en nurserie, entre 30 et 36 mètres de profondeur.

🪸 What if reef protection came from those who depend on it most?

In Kenya, through the REEL programme, members from different coastal villages become reef ambassadors: raising awareness, sharing knowledge, and carrying the project forward for the long term.

They are between 18 and 68 years old, creating a unique dialogue between memory of the past and visions for the future.
Women and men are stepping up. Up to 50% of participants are women - a rare opportunity to learn, get involved, and diversify their income, sometimes even discovering the ocean for the first time.

For at least 6 months, they train… then become the voices of the reef within their communities 💙

🪸 Et si la protection des récifs venait de celles et ceux qui en dépendent ?

Au Kenya, avec le programme REEL, des membres de différents villages côtiers deviennent ambassadeur·rices du récif : ils sensibilisent, transmettent et portent le projet sur le long terme.

Ils ont entre 18 et 68 ans et créent un dialogue unique entre mémoire du passé et perspectives futures.

Femmes et hommes s’engagent. Et jusqu’à 50% de femmes participent au programme. Une opportunité rare pour apprendre, s’impliquer et diversifier leurs revenus, parfois même en découvrant l’océan pour la première fois.

Pendant 6 mois minimum, ils se forment… puis deviennent les voix du récif dans leur communauté 💙
