We are deeply saddened to share the loss of our Dominican Republic Country Director, Durbel Lora Brito.

Durbel passed away due to injuries sustained in a traffic collision in the Dominican Republic on the morning of January 8, 2026.

Durbel faithfully served rural communities in the Dominican Republic for decades. He joined Floresta Incorporada, Plant With Purpose’s Dominican partner organization, in 1998 as an agronomist. In 2016, he was appointed as country director. Under his faithful leadership, the program has thrived, helping more than 138,000 people overcome rural poverty and planting over 27 million trees.

Durbel was passionate about the stewardship of creation and about helping others become more conscious of their role. He is survived by his wife, Alfa, sons Durbelin and Jorge, and mother Nidia.

“My name is Wilson. I live in Haiti, but my wife and our nine children are living in the Dominican Republic.”

For Wilson, this distance has become part of daily life. His wife and children live across the border for work, while he remains behind to care for their land in Haiti. It is a hard situation but one that has helped him understand the importance of relationships. Whether it’s his family, his neighbors, or the earth itself, Wilson has learned that restoration begins when people reconnect.

Like many farmers in his region, Wilson was working tirelessly but still watching his harvests wash away. The storms seemed stronger each year, and the soil weaker. What used to be lush and fertile ground became harder and harder to cultivate. “The rain would come,” he says, “and everything I worked for could disappear in a few hours.”

That began to change when Wilson joined a local program with Plant With Purpose. “I joined the program and received training on tree planting and nursery techniques,” he says. “After applying what I learned on my own land, I saw major improvements. My soil became richer, and my harvests increased.”
