🧗🏿‍♀️ We recently took 50 men into the mountains for their first ever climbing experience!

⛰️ Over the past 8 years of working in Malakasa, we have observed that many people do not feel comfortable exploring their nearby surroundings.

🌲 Our guided trips into the local environment are an important step in helping people newly arrived in Greece feel that nature is accessible to them, too.

🧗🏿‍♂️ Another climbing adventure completed!

⛰️ Our community centre sits at the base of the mountains in Malakasa, where a professional climber bolted four beginner routes into the rocks for us.

🥾 This enables us to offer our community members hiking trips and climbing lessons: an activity most people have never had the opportunity to try before.

At Sama, we are committed to adapting to the needs of our community: through practical assistance, emotional support, and ensuring we are fully prepared to respond in an emergency.

🩺 MSI already provide essential medical care at Sama two days a week, and this additional training further reinforces our shared commitment to community wellbeing.

🧣 When we first opened Sama a year ago, we decided not to conduct distributions. However, after getting to know our community and understanding the significant need, we added it to our regular programming.

🫴🏼 Most of the clothing we have distributed have been donated by generous individuals. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed much-needed winter items for the refugee community in Malakasa.

🚲 This is the second winter our volunteer Niek has brought his electric bicycles to Sama to lead cycling trips through the Malakasa mountains.

⛰️ This activity gives community members a unique opportunity to explore their surrounding natural environment, and to experience freedom of movement and respite away from the restrictive environment of the camp.

🧥 When we first opened Sama, we decided not to organise distributions. Having run community sports program for six years, it wasn’t exactly our area of expertise!

However, as we got to know the community we work with, we understood the significant need.

People often arrive in Greece with little more than the clothes on their backs. Inside the camps, even basic necessities like soap are no longer provided.

After thoroughly researching how to carry out distributions in a fair and dignified manner, we chose to incorporate them into our activities.

Thanks to the collective support of our partner organisations, volunteers, and the generosity of our network, we have been distributing jackets and warm clothes for the coming winter months, as well as blankets and essential hygiene packs.

This is community in action: listening, adapting, and improving our skillset to respond to the realities people face.
