A great morning for wildlife at the Park End Community Garden: why we do what we do.
Ladybirds galore, including a larvae having a sip of Vimto (oops!). A shield bug dropped in/on for coffee.
Plus the regular wildlife crew πŸ˜„. Good to see you all

A great conversation with a regular Vulcan Park dog walker. They said how much they have enjoyed the scent from the native honeysuckle we grow on the vertical garden in our Park End Community Garden πŸ˜€.
Good to know we are improving people's experiences in the park....our Community Garden is just that!
Great work team!

Not a view we get to see on Thursday mornings when we're at the Park End Community Garden. Lovely photo taken this evening by one of our local volunteers.
Thanks for your efforts and dedication guys. Hope to see you all again next Thursday morning 10-12 noon. Newcomers welcome.

Lots of different activities in the Park End Community Garden this morning.
Watering, Watering and then some more Watering πŸ’§. A full morning's work.
Taming shrubs in the vertical garden to allow safe access. Compost turned then fresh green garden waste added.
Resowed salad crops that had been dug up by ?cat.
Enjoyed watching the blackbird family splashing in the mini pond. So wonderful to provide facilities for wildlife.

There was a lot of watering to do in the Park End Community Garden this morning. Plants are really struggling with the intense sun and heat. They loose water through their leaves, the more leaves, the more fluid they loose, but they take in water via their roots. Be a wise waterer: always water down at the ground. This reduces water wastage and helps the plants even more. We're really glad we have a large water container to harvest rainwater. Hopefully we have enough for another week.
The heat hasn't had an effect on our potato crop. First spuds lifted today: the photo shows just one shaw of reds: beauties!

Busy morning at the Park End Community Garden preparing for the judges visit next week. We have entered the RHS "It's Your Neighbourhood" awards for gardens. 🀞
If there was an award for dedication and hard grafting I would give it to our volunteers who turn up to make a difference to the Community Garden.
It was great to have a conversation with some people in the Vulcans Park who were really impressed at all the improvements in the Park, and the extra that the Community Garden added to this. Thanks for calling by. πŸ˜ƒ
SO pleased with our new signs, thanks to Firpress and Keith and team Workington Town Council, plus The National Lottery.
That photo was taken today, and has not been enhanced: the sky REALLY was that blue.

Lots of activities going on in the Park End Community Garden this morning.
Weeding, weeding and a bit more weeding, say no more! The garden looks more loved because of the volunteers hard work.
We planted chard, sowed salad leaves and dead headed to encouragerepeat flowering. Compost heap added to.
And don't forget the grass cutting, it is peak growing season after all!
Take a look at our harvest: red onions, garlic(a bit small) lettuce, extremely delicious strawberries and raspberries.
Great work team, see you all again next Thursday morning πŸ˜‰β˜ΊοΈ

Strawberry Thief alert!! This fledgling blackbird and parent bird were keen for us not to have our fruit this morning at the Park End Community Garden! I was approximately a metre from the bird when I took this photo. How beautiful these birds are; the berries were delicious too!

Wonderful colour in the garden at the moment: pholmis, hybrid clover, geranium, perennial wallflower "Bowles Mauve", toadflax, and a glorious cream rose.

Grateful for the shade the trees provided today. Last week we were sheltering from the rain 🫣

Fortunately us diehards sheltered in the Park End Community Centre until 10.45am when the rain stopped and we were able to garden for an hour. Hurray!
Lots of lovely colours in the perennial beds at the moment. First sweet peas flowering in the vertical garden and first home grown πŸ“ eaten with appreciation.
I'm aways delighted to see wildlife enjoying the Community Garden too. Fledgling blackbird around being fed by parent and young bluetits heard a lot too

What do volunteers do? Turn up week after week to give their best. Despite the awful forecast ( which was wrong, hooray) we had a dry windy morning so got on with weeding, planting broccoli and staking beans.
But made sure we celebrated with coffee and cake

Looking forward to seeing you all again next Thursday morning, 10am-12noon.
