The Park End Community Garden (formerly Grow Well Community Garden) welcomes anyone. We meet Thursday mornings 10am- 12noon. Winter hours may vary.

Supported by Grow Well West Cumbria CIC, we aim to connect people through gardening.

Autumn tidy up in the Park End Community Garden today. And what lovely Autumn weather! Such a contrast to last weekend.
What a great and active team we are 😀👋👏
Come along and join us for gentle outdoor activity Thursday mornings 10-12. ( There's coffee and a biscuit too 😉).

We're delighted to have been awarded the top marks, the second year running, for the Park End Community Garden. This award is given by the Royal Horticultural Society judges who visited the garden in July. The judging criteria includes community involvement and improvement, environmental impact and sustainability, biodiversity and horticultural practice.
I say this most weeks, because it should be recognised and appaulled 👏 👏, it's the commitment of the volunteers who turn up week after week and do their bit to make the Park End Community Garden a great place to be, for wildlife and people.
This award is yours guys, and rightly deserved. Hip, hip, hooray 😀 🙌 😄

These people put in a lot of hard work, week after week, to keep the the Park End Community Garden looking great, plus enhancing your local neighborhood. Hats off to them 👋👏🙌🤛🫶👐😃

Busy, busy, busy, that's what the Park End Community Garden volunteers were this morning. The results have made the garden look great.
There was weeding, mulching, grass cutting. Also cutting back perennials, not to ground level: by leaving some vegetation above ground it protects the plants underground from frost damage. That's if we ever have frosts again! I mean it's October 1st today and was 19C tops! Poor planet.
We tied new raspberry canes to support wires for extra security against the plant rocking too much.. We certainly get plenty of strong winds!
Also planted and staked young kale plants for winter harvesting. They look feeble atm due to the cabbage white caterpillars, but now they are gone for the season the plants should soon recover.
Oh yes, and we sowed green manure on a fallow bed.
I told you we were busy! But still had time for coffee and cake, thank you so to the baker 😉😊

Lots of action this morning at the Park End Community Garden. Wildflower plug plants added to the patch, plus fresh yellow rattle seeds sown, purchased from Cumbria Wildflowers
Strawberry runners potted up for new plants next year. This year's raspberry canes cut back to make room for new growth which should provide next years fruit 🤞😋. Grass cut again: someone clearly enjoys doing it.
And we were treated to flapjack today. The coffee time snack is getting better and better.
There are lots of runner bean and some pea flowers. Might be too late in the season for produce, but they add brightness to the garden.
Other flowers include hops on the pergola trellis. Not enough to set up a side line yet!
Great to spend time together, see you all again next week 😀

Great to have so many lovely volunteers at the Park End Community Garden this morning. It meant lots of gardening was done.
We were busy preparing the wildflower patch and planted plug plants from Cumbria Wildlife Trust nursery. What a great facility this is at Gosling Syke.
Tidying perennial beds, harvesting potatoes, rocket leaves and raddichio.
Not to mention the cake, coffee and craic.
Hope to see you all again next week 😉😊

We were busy at the Park End Community Garden this morning until the rain chased us indoors for a cuppa.
Raked our wildflower patch: cut grass/ flower stalks had been left a couple of weeks for seed to fall. Rakings put on compost and watered.
Planted some perennial plants between our lovely vertical garden planters to increase wildlife diversity and habitat. This also helps to suppress weeds.
Harvested more potatoes grown in a pot.
Also managed some weeding.
Enjoyed a cuppa and a craic.

A great morning for wildlife at the Park End Community Garden: why we do what we do.
Ladybirds galore, including a larvae having a sip of Vimto (oops!). A shield bug dropped in/on for coffee.
Plus the regular wildlife crew 😄. Good to see you all

A great conversation with a regular Vulcan Park dog walker. They said how much they have enjoyed the scent from the native honeysuckle we grow on the vertical garden in our Park End Community Garden 😀.
Good to know we are improving people's experiences in the park....our Community Garden is just that!

Lots of different activities in the Park End Community Garden this morning.
Watering, Watering and then some more Watering 💧. A full morning's work.
Taming shrubs in the vertical garden to allow safe access. Compost turned then fresh green garden waste added.
Resowed salad crops that had been dug up by ?cat.
Enjoyed watching the blackbird family splashing in the mini pond. So wonderful to provide facilities for wildlife.
