Rain stopped play at the Park End Community Garden this morning 😐. However I'm sure the plants, fruit and vegetables have enjoyed the drenching: I didn't!
Mr McGregor, made famous by Beatrix Potter, would have been very proud of these beauties. Deliciously peppery and crunchy too. No idea why they were growing with the spuds, but hey that's one of the joys of gardening

What do volunteers do? Turn up week after week to give their best. Despite the awful forecast ( which was wrong, hooray) we had a dry windy morning so got on with weeding, planting broccoli and staking beans.
But made sure we celebrated with coffee and cake

Looking forward to seeing you all again next Thursday morning, 10am-12noon.

What a delight to watch the very busy bluetit parents feeding their 2nd brood of chicks at the Park End Community Garden. This is a first for the garden; we have never known more than one brood raised in the nest box before. Hooray!
The other main distraction today is the lush colours all around the Park End Community Garden: ceanothis in full bloom = bee heaven, ox-eye daisies, home grown cornflower in the extended section of the Wild Flower patch, chives protecting the raspberries. Plus bright yellow gems, a heavenly white rose, John's rose, purple and blues from erysimums, aqualegia and cranesbill.
Such abundance, plus 🌞.
There was a lot of hard grafting today too, thanks everyone, your hard work is showing well 👍 😀

Great action at the Park End Community Garden this morning. And the weather was kind to us too! Luckily we have the Park End Community Centre to shelter in when the shower arrived. Thank you
Grass cutting, runner beans and peas planted. Potatoes coming on well, we're trying a seaweed mulch: watch this space!
Thanks for the hard work today everyone

We managed some horticultural jobs this morning as well as 'Spring cleaning' the Park End Community Garden.
Pricking out broccoli and cornflower seedlings, compost harvesting/ turning. Topping up established planters with compost and feeding/ mulching our strawberry wall.
We're also starting to fill the new planters (-smith) on the pergola. Climbing roses, clematis, golden hop and everlasting pea. Looking forward to the lovely colours and perfume.

COMPOST: the homemade kind.
Why bother?
1. It's free
2. It improves soil texture, moisture retention and suppresses weeds if used as a mulch.
3. It's an organic product full of creatures that work together to produce the best growing medium for plants.
4. Attracts wildlife
We started applying our homemade compost on the growing beds today. We sieve the compost, and larger, partially decomposed material goes back in the compost heap.
This blackbird had been hanging around most of the morning and was working the newly spread compost before we had locked up!
There's food for all creatures, human and otherwise at the Park End Community Garden.

A busy, sunny morning at the Park End Community Garden 😀
Compost sorted: SO much lovely, free organic matter ready to go on the growing beds.
More tatties planted, and that's not all of them!
Seeds sown in a bare bit of Wildflower patch.
Seedlings in cold frame already germinating from those sown last week: that's Spring for you 👍
Grass cut and we even managed to squeeze in a brew.
I told you we were busy! Thanks for your efforts today guys.
Confirmation that the blue tit's are nesting in the box again: yippee. This is their 3rd or 4th year.
