☀️ Hot Weather on the Farm: Looking After Animals and People 🐑🚜💧

When working on a farm, the animals still need feeding, watering, and daily care no matter how hot the weather gets. In fact, extreme heat often means more work, not less. Animals can struggle in high temperatures just like humans, so they need extra attention to help them stay safe and comfortable.

During hot weather, farm staff and rangers check animals more frequently to make sure they:
🐄 Have constant access to fresh, clean water
🌳 Can find shade when they need it
🐑 Are showing no signs of heat stress or dehydration
💧 Have water troughs checked and refilled regularly, as animals drink much more in hot conditions

Heat can affect different animals in different ways. Some may become less active, eat less, or seek out cooler areas. Watching for changes in behaviour is an important part of animal welfare during hot spells.

But it’s not only the animals that need looking after. The people caring for them need to stay cool and hydrated too. Farm work is physically demanding, and working outdoors in extreme temperatures increases the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.

To help keep our rangers cool, we’ve been:
🏞️ Having a paddle in the lake during breaks
🦶 Cooling our feet and ankles in a shaded paddling pool at lunchtime and break times
🚿 Enjoying the occasional sneaky spray from the hosepipe to cool down after working in the sun
🥤 Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
🌳 Taking breaks in shaded areas whenever possible

These simple cooling measures can make a big difference. Cooling the feet and ankles, taking shade breaks, and even a quick hosepipe spray can help lower body temperature and make working in the heat much more comfortable.

Whether you’re caring for animals, working outdoors, or simply enjoying the sunshine, remember:
✔️ Drink water regularly
✔️ Take breaks in the shade
✔️ Wear suitable clothing and sun protection
✔️ Check on animals and vulnerable people more often during hot weather

We hope everyone is staying safe and coping well in the heat. Remember, looking after animals starts with looking after the people who care for them too. And sometimes, a sneaky hosepipe spray helps keep everyone smiling! ☀️🐾💙🚿😄

🐣 Breaking incubator news! 🐣

Today is the day! As you can see, our ducklings have already started the exciting process of making their way into the world. It’s always an amazing moment to witness the first signs of life emerging from the eggs.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the incubator throughout the day as more little beaks and fluffy faces hopefully make their appearance.

Watch this space for updates as our newest arrivals continue their journey into the world! 🦆💛

🌱 Green Team Garden Update 🌱

Today, the Green Team spent the day checking on and harvesting some of our wonderful crops! 🥔🌿

We lifted a selection of potatoes and gathered fresh beans and courgettes, celebrating the rewards of all the hard work put into the garden this season. 🍽️✨

With temperatures continuing to soar, we also made sure to give everything a good watering to keep our plants healthy, hydrated, and thriving. 💧☀️

🌙✨ Moth Trap Magic! ✨🌙

We were very excited to check our moth trap this morning, and it certainly didn’t disappoint! 🦋

We carefully transferred each moth into little observation pots so we could get a closer look and try our hand at identifying them before releasing them safely back into the wild.

Among our visitors, we confidently identified:
🔸 Garden Tiger
🔸 Dark Arches
🔸 Buff Ermine
🔸 Small Magpie

We also spotted a couple that might have been a Silver Y and an Orange Underwing 🤔—they were definitely trickier to identify!

Every single moth was beautiful in its own way, and we felt incredibly lucky to see these fascinating creatures up close. It’s easy to forget just how much wildlife is active while we’re asleep.

This has inspired us to do it again throughout the year to see how our nocturnal visitors change with the seasons. 🍂❄️🌱☀️ It’s such a wonderful way to learn about local biodiversity and connect with nature right on our doorstep.

Have you ever tried moth trapping? What’s the most unusual species you’ve found?

🌙✨ A Nighttime Wildlife Adventure Begins! ✨🌙

We’ve been generously loaned a moth trap to help us discover some of the fascinating nocturnal visitors that call our farm home.

The trap has been set up in a sheltered spot behind our craft studio, where a special light will attract moths and other night-flying insects. Inside, we’ve arranged egg boxes to provide plenty of safe, dark places for our visitors to rest.

Before anyone worries, the trap is completely harmless. The moths are not injured or trapped permanently – they simply settle inside overnight. Tomorrow morning, we’ll carefully identify our guests before releasing them back into their natural habitat.

Moths play an important role in our ecosystems, acting as pollinators and providing food for birds, bats, and other wildlife. Monitoring them can tell us a lot about the health and biodiversity of our local environment.

We can’t wait to see who pays us a visit tonight! 🦋🌿

Have you ever taken part in a moth survey or discovered an unusual moth in your garden? Let us know in the comments! 👇

🐹🥦 From seed to squeak! 🥦🐹

Our guinea pig colony is enjoying a feast of homegrown cauliflower, grown right here by our rangers.

🌱 It all started as a tiny seed.
👨‍🌾 Our rangers nurtured it as it grew.
🥦 The cauliflower was harvested at its freshest.
🐹 And now it’s providing a healthy, vitamin-rich snack for our guinea pigs.

This is a great example of a simple sustainable growing cycle: food is grown on-site, cared for by the people who know it best, and fed directly to the animals that enjoy it. Fewer food miles, less waste, and plenty of happy guinea pig munching!

Did you know? Guinea pigs can eat cauliflower in moderation, including the leaves, which are packed with nutrients and often go unused by people.

From seed, to garden, to guinea pig bowl — a perfect little circle of care. 💚

📸 A roundup of some of our unseen photos from Royal Cheshire County Show 2026!

While we’ve loved showing goats, pigs, sheep, and this year’s lambs in the spotlight, we couldn’t let the show season pass without celebrating the people behind it all — our amazing rangers.

These are the faces that work together every day on the farm, supporting one another through mornings, busy days, and everything in between. They are our biggest supporters, our loudest cheerleaders, and the heart of what we do.

One of the highlights of the show was meeting Kelvin Fletcher , a farming hero and idol to some of our rangers. They were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet him, have a chat, and grab a few photos to remember the day. A big thank you to Kelvin for taking the time to stop and say hello — it meant a lot to our team. Fletchers On The Farm

It was fantastic to take our team along to Cheshire Show and share the experience together. The animals may have drawn the crowds, but our rangers are the reason it all happens.

A huge thank you to everyone at Cheshire Show 2026 for another fantastic event. We’ve had an incredible time, made lasting memories, and we’re already looking forward to next year.

See you in 2027 — bigger, better, and ready for another amazing show! 🌟🚜🐑🐐🐷
