We are Hoylake & West Kirby Sea Cadets and part of the UK's largest maritime youth charity. Cadets do loads, from sailing and kayaking, windsurfing and band, to rock climbing and drill.

Last night one of our volunteers, CI I.Langton, was presented a Lord Lieutenant award from Peter Oliver OBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Merseyside (HM Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside), for his outstanding fundraising efforts totalling over £4,000 for our unit, a community defibrillator and Prostate Cancer UK

On 1st August 2025, CI Langton set off on a gruelling 130 mile paddle in his Kayak from Leeds to Liverpool, navigating through 94 locks in the canal system and Storm Florice. This test of endurance took place over 4 days and raised over £2,000 that was donated towards prostate cancer charity and our unit.

On 30th September 2024, CI Langton along with PO P.Eyres completed a 24 hour non stop kayak challenge on West Kirby marine lake to raise over £2,000 towards a community defibrillator, that has now been installed at the top of Grange Hill and a donation to support fundraising for our unit.

And it doesn’t stop there… rumour has it that CI Langton is already planning his next fundraising adventure and it may include the length of the River Severn. Keep a watchful eye on our page 👀

Last night we held our Annual General Meeting to discuss the unit progress and achievements from April 2025 - March 2026.
Notable achievements:
• 89 Course attendees
• 5 new volunteer staff joined
• 936 qualifications and CTP modules awarded
• 8 junior cadet modules awarded
• 977 boating hours achieved
• 6 cadets attended offshore voyages
• 6 cadets attended camps
• 13 cadets working through DofE awards
• Ship visit from former Sea Cadet Captain Neil Downing RD RN
• Opening of our new Royal Marine cadet detachment

We would like to thank our community for the continued support and to our committee, local councillors, district officers and cadets parents/ guardians for attending yesterday evening.

🚨 Can You Help Us Grow? 🚨

Our unit is continuing to grow, and we need more space to keep giving young people in our community the opportunity to take part in Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets.

Our cadets develop lifelong skills, confidence, teamwork and leadership, while working towards valuable experiences and professional qualifications that can benefit them well beyond their time with us.

As a charity, our running costs and the opportunities we provide are funded through fundraising and donations. With your support, we can expand our facilities and welcome even more young people to our unit. ⚓️

🛠️ What do we need to do?

1️⃣ Remove the grass verge
Prepare the area for our new facility.

2️⃣ Level the ground
Create a suitable and safe base.

3️⃣ Install our new dedicated Marine Cadet space
Purchase and fit out a new portacabin to provide our Marine Cadets with a dedicated space to train, learn and develop.

Last night we returned back to our unit marking the end of our 2026 boating season. More details to follow on our cadet boating achievements but last night:

✅ Promotion of AC S.Dodd to Leading Cadet
✅ Presentation of STEM award and Green Badge to AJC D. Birtles and promotion to leading junior cadet
✅ Focused on CTP units and cadet aims over the winter months
🔥 Also squeezed in a quick fire drill

Moving into Autumn allows our cadets to focus on the CTP modules, essential for promotion and land based proficiencies and specialisations.

Anybody know where the wind, sun and daylight has gone? A very light wind session last night, so our cadets practised their boat trimming 🫣 and steerage under tow. ☔️

Release a whole bags of play balls. 🔴🟠🟣🔵🟤🟢🟡
A great way to practise boat handling, speed control and vessel avoidance. The most boat got 40 balls.

Last year we expanded our unit to open and form a new marine cadets detachment. One year on, we want to take a moment to celebrate the success of our new detachment and excited to see what more is to come. Led by our detachment commander Lieutenant Neil Monaghan and parading on a Monday night, we have recruited 5 dedicated probationary sergeants and 13 marine cadets and recruits. Well done to all our cadets and staff for their hard work to establish this detachment. Drop us a message if you want to learn more about joining 💚

Last weekend we were lucky to be invited onboard HMS Mersey whilst she was docked in Liverpool Cruise Port , to tour round this River Class offshore patrol vessel and meet someone of the Royal Navy crew members.
Named after the famous River Mersey, this was a fantastic opportunity for our cadets to see first hand and learn more about possible careers in the Royal Navy and already a couple of cadets have shown an interested.
Thank you to the ships company for welcoming us onboard.
