⭐ Client Story ⭐
We were delighted to support Carey who attended East Anglian DriveAbility following a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
After completing an assessment and receiving tailored driving tuition, she kindly shared her experience with us:
"18 months ago my right leg went stiff and then I woke up not being able to move it at all. The movement came back but I no longer had the same control or sensation and neuralgia symptoms spread quickly to both feet. I immediately lost my independence and a big part of what made me, well, me.
For almost 9 months I had no diagnosis but when it finally came, Progressive MS, I had to face the fact that I needed to find a new way of living. I got a mobility scooter, then sourced a car it could go into, and then contacted East Anglian Driveability to sort out how I could drive the car myself.
Right from the first moment the staff were a great help, the lady on the phone explained my options and I applied to Mobility services to fund my initial assessment.
When the day came I was very nervous, regaining my independence was a big deal to me, I was navigating grief at the loss of the life I had lived and my mental health was low, what if they said I couldn’t do anything? Again the staff were brilliant. The two ladies, Jo and Dani, who took me through my initial assessment were supportive, straight forward and calm, they explained exactly what adaptations I would need (hand controls) and went through options for lessons, booking me in there and then for a short course before my final assessment.
I turned up for my first lesson, still very apprehensive, I had no idea how it would feel to drive in a whole new way, and after an 18 month break I was nervous about heading out into traffic.
Then I met Aneta, what can I say, what an inspiring lady! Aneta put me at ease, she totally got me, she encouraged me to push myself whilst also reassuring me of my safety at all times with L plates and dual controls. She encouraged my plans for what I would be able to do again once I mastered the driving and taught me calmly and carefully until driving started to feel, not only possible, but natural, as if I had never driven any other way.
With Aneta’s support I went for my final assessment with more confidence and again was put totally at ease by the two assessors, Nicky and Paul, who seemed as pleased as I was when they were able to give me the all clear.
A lot of people have helped me on my way to learning a new way of living and East Anglian Driveability certainly have done their part, I think of them when I drive to the coast with my dog or collect my grandchildren from school. I can’t thank them enough.
