Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team - Tavistock We exist to help the police and other related rescue organisations to locate, render appropriate assistance, and evacuate missing persons to safety.

Our services are entirely voluntary and in particular demand in situations where weather conditions are poor and the location of the missing person is unknown. All team members are highly trained in a variety of skills ranging from First Aid through to Navigation, searching techniques and radio operation. Individual search teams are coordinated through a team leader who is in constant radio contac

t with the controller coordinating the search effort. We work closely with the police who initiate calls to us in situations where our services may be required. Tavistock is one of four teams which make up the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team group.

Wow. Thank you.

We are incredibly humbled by the amazing support shown by our intrepid 11 Tors participants. Thanks to your enthusiasm, we're now close to a sell-out for the 2026 event.

A small number of places are still available, particularly on the 5-mile Mini Explorer route, which is perfect for younger adventurers and those looking for a slightly less demanding challenge.

📢 Thank you 📢

Olivia who is 8 years old recently took on a personal challenge of walking 35 km from Okehampton to Tavistock, to raise money for Dartmoor Search and Rescue - Tavistock.

She loved every minute walking with her Daddy and had a lot of supporters who kindly donated money and supported her along the Granite Way, with detours of Sourton Tor and Gibbett Hill, before heading into Tavistock. Olivia raised £300 for the team.

Lydford Caravan and Camping kindly donated a nights stay to the cause

We've been delighted by the overwhelming response to our Dartmoor Outdoor Festival pre 11 Tors Leaders' Walk. All of the original places have now been fully booked!

Thankfully, help is at hand as DSRT Tavistock team member Steve has stepped in to join Andy and lead an additional group. Like Andy, Steve knows every twist and turn, every stone and blade of grass along the route, ensuring an informative and enjoyable experience for all.

Thanks to Steve's generosity, a limited number of extra places are now available. However, with just 11 spaces remaining, we recommend booking as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

85 years young!

Join the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock in commemorating the 85th anniversary of RAF Harrowbeer becoming operational in August 1941.

The team will be attending the 1940's celebration weekend in Yelverton alongside many 1940's vehicles and other memorabilia.

The team will be there on both Saturday August 22nd and Sunday August 23rd - why not pop along and say hello, whilst also looking around the various stalls and - maybe, just maybe -grabbing a cheeky ice cream!

A little known fact:
Harrowbeer saw its most distinguished visitor arrive on 2 August 1945, when US President Harry Truman, returning home from the Potsdam Conference, was unable to route via RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall due to it being closed due to fog, and his aircraft landed instead at Harrowbeer. Reception formalities were somewhat limited and, after dining with King George VI onboard the Royal Navy Battlecruiser HMS Renown in Plymouth, Truman sailed for his Atlantic crossing onboard the American cruiser USS Augusta.

MREW CEO visit!

DSRT Tavistock recently welcomed Andy Buchan, Chief Executive of Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW), to discuss the team's work supporting both local residents and visitors across Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

During the visit, the team shared experiences from recent support operations, including assisting with evacuations during unexploded ordnance incidents, alongside the search and rescue activities they regularly carry out on Dartmoor.

Discussions also covered proposed changes to Care Quality Commission (CQC) registration requirements. The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care services in England, and changes to its registration processes could have implications for some volunteer rescue organisations that provide medical care as part of their emergency response work.

The conversation also highlighted the growing role of Mountain Rescue teams in supporting local communities and working alongside emergency services through Local Resilience Forums, which coordinate planning and response to major incidents and emergencies.

Andy is currently visiting all 48 Mountain Rescue teams across England and Wales, making this a significant undertaking! From all the team in Tavistock, we would like to thank Andy for taking the time to meet with us and look forward to hearing how his travels continue.

Come and meet Andy!

As part of the Dartmoor Outdoor Festival, Andy - from the team in Tavistock and 11 Tors route planner - will lead a group around the 'main' 11 Tors Challenge route on Saturday August 29th.

This is a great chance to spend some time with a member of the team, whilst also learning about places of interest along the way. It's also a valuable opportunity if you are attending the actual 11 Tors Challenge on September 19th as you'll gain a wealth of information and knowledge. This is particularly helpful if you are leading a group on the day yourself.

Spaces are limited, so if you want to attend, we'd encourage you to grab a ticket as soon as you can. All proceeds go towards the team, so even if you can't attend the main event in September, it's another way of supporting us in the work we do, helping to keep Dartmoor safe.

🚨 Callouts🚨 incidents #26 & #27

#26, 4th August.
We were requested at 20:30 to search for a lost, cold male, deemed to be at high risk. His last known location was near Down Tor.

Our search commenced just as it was getting dark with five search parties deployed from Norsworthy Bridge Car Park to search Eastwards between Newleycombe Lake to the north and the track to Deancombe to the south.

Thankfully, the missing person was located unharmed on the Deancombe track and escorted back to the RVP, where he was handed over to the care of Police personnel. Members returned to our base by 23:00.

#27, 6th August.

We were called at 01:28 to assist South West Ambulance personnel with the extraction of a party of three campers, two of whom were unwell, cold and unable to walk off ⛺

Team members deployed with two stretchers and casualty bags for insulation. All three were handed over to ambulance crews at the roadside and the team was stood down at 3:30 am
