*Thank you* North Petherton for welcoming us back!

*Thank you* to the Town Council whose support for the project has been pivotal.

*A big thanks* to the lovely people in the Walnut Tree for letting us take over part of their hotel.

*Thanks* to all of the amazing people who have given up parts of their gardens.

*A massive thanks* to all of the diggers and sievers and all of their aching muscles.

Let’s do it all again in July 🎉❤️

*Update from the pits and an invitation*

Well already we are finding some really interesting finds!! It all has to be looked at by experts to confirm but we think that we have a tiny bit of blue Roman glass, a lithic (similar to a flint) possibly made of tuff (a type of stone not normally found in this area!). Around 6000 years old … one of the oldest finds from NP … add that to bits of pottery, charcoal and animal bone … a great start.

*Now the invite* … we will be doing a guide tour around the open pits. It’s free and will start in the bar on the Walnut Tree Hotel at 2pm!

We are back!
North Petherton, we will be digging up your past, one test pit at a time, starting this weekend (11th and 12th April).

Keep an eye out for when we will be doing our guided tours and join us at 3:30, in the Walnut Tree, for an end of day round up.

The QHG will be digging five test pits on April 11th-12th. Come say hello at The Walnut Tree Hotel or around the northern end of town to see archaeology in action.

Last year we uncovered this piece of yellow and brown slipware, although it looks quite modern, its actually Staffordshire Slip-ware dated to between 1650 and 1740.

Who knows what else we’ll find…. could it be in your garden?

In 2025, the QHG began digging 1x1m archaeological tests pits in gardens around North Petherton. We are back this year to dig 10 more test pits.
We will be digging five test pits on April 11th-12th. Come say hello at The Walnut Tree Hotel or around the northern end of town to see archaeology in action.
Last year’s finds included a copper alloy object. We’re not sure what it is but think it is an awl or scribe, possibly used in leather working. It has not been dated yet but maybe early post-medieval (around AD 1600).
Who knows what else we’ll find…. could it be in your garden?

A massive thank you to Ruth, Caroline, Jane, and Marilyn. As dedicated QHG Members, they successfully represented us at the North Petherton Town Council to help secure a grant award.

This funding will have a big impact on what we do. It allows us to purchase our own professional excavation gear and 'feather flags' to help the community find our dig sites.

Want to get involved in local heritage and archaeology across the Quantocks? Our members are the heart of everything we do. Here is the link to find out more …

… and you could be helping us to unearth more local history!

And last, but by no means least, a massive thanks to North Petherton Town Council for their support … we can’t wait to be back in April to dig a further 5 pits with more in July!! Details to follow soon!

There’s nothing like a crisp walk to blow away the cobwebs. We followed the stream through Kings Cliff and past Rooks Castle, seeing the water in full flow just as it would have looked centuries ago. We finished with a well-earned coffee at Fyne Court. Check out the full story of our journey along the river on the QHG blog.

Thanks to Jon and the Quantock Hills National Landscape for hosting us and Denise for guiding us and sharing her knowledge of the area.

Following last month’s well-received talk on the early results from the North Petherton test pitting, our next lecture turns to flint tools.
The session will be led by our Chairman, Ant, and will explore how flint artefacts are identified, dated, and what they can tell us about past activity.
