It’s that time of the fortnight again - here’s your latest Dè tha dol? round up 😊

The latest Dè tha dol? is now in stock at all our Harris retailers. Pick up your copy of our community newsletter to find out what's happening around the island this October.

We're taking a short break after this issue, so the next Dè tha dol? will be in three weeks time, as opposed to the usual two. Deadline Tuesday October 27th for publication on Friday 30th.

Our apologies to any readers who receive their copy without staples this week!

We had a lovely tea break in the office today, joining the . We chatted about our favourite recent reads, took 5 minutes to enjoy a few pages of reading time and set up a wee book swap shelf in the corner.

HVS is proud to support the National Year of Reading, celebrating the power and importance of books and stories. More than 87000 have taken part in the 'reading moment' so far today.

Monday is stock-taking day at the Harris Foodbank, in the bus (TI car park) waiting room in the centre of Tarbert. We work with Volunteer Centre Western Isles - Harris and volunteers from Sir E Scott School school to keep this well-used facility topped up with essentials for any residents who need it.

Donations (both financial and of non-perishable food and toiletries) are always welcome. Please get in touch, pop into our Old Primary School office, or follow the QR code link on the image. We are working on plans to expand the project to Leverburgh in the near future...

Dè tha dol? update -
Thank you for your patience and understanding! 💛

Apologies to our readers. Due to a printing issue, this week's Dè tha dol? will not reach most stockists today - although it is available from Ardhasaig Stores, which received the first batch before things went kaput.

We are expecting an engineer first thing on Monday morning and will deliver as soon as we can after that!

To make us feel better, here is a picture of a Gestetner duplicating machine, like the one (we think) that was used to print the early Dè tha dols. Although hand operated, these had far less parts and were probably less prone to paper jams!

The Outer Hebrides Local Action Group is launching a pilot grant scheme to support small island businesses that contribute to local priorities, including:

* Climate change & Net Zero
* Community Wealth Building & tackling poverty
* Dùthchas & Dualchas
* Sustainable transport & connectivity
* Supporting children & young people

📅 Deadline for submitting applications - 20th October
📅 Funded activity must be completed - 18 February 2027

2026-27 CLLD Small Business Fund launched

The Outer Hebrides Local Action Group is piloting a grant scheme aimed specifically at small island businesses which, through their core business or a specific activity, will contribute to the LAG’s stated priorities.

Here's the latest Dè tha dol? heading out to our lovely stockists around the island, who should all have their copies by mid afternoon today (remember our new print day is Friday).

Over the next few issues, we want to acknowledge the lovely local retailers who support us. Today that's Ardhasaig Filling Station, where you can get 24-hour fuel, tasty treats, engine oil, a warm welcome - and of course your community newspaper (did we mention that it costs just £1).

What a brilliant range of activities to look forward to in Leverburgh

Looking ahead to life after the builders!

As we approach the final few months of our renovation project, we’re starting to look beyond the building work and think about what happens when the builders leave.

We’ve received funding to purchase some fantastic new sports equipment, and we already have lots of activities planned for our newly renovated hall.

We’re particularly keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in running Zumba or Yoga classes in the hall.

And if you’d like to take part in any of the groups or activities planned, drop us a message or leave a comment below. We’d love to hear what people in the community would like to see happening.

We’re going to have a lovely, bright, warm and welcoming space — so let’s make the most of it!

Can you support Tarbert Community Centre - Isle of Harris by donating a prize for their raffle?

✨ ️Can you help us? ✨️ We are looking to run a raffle or two to raise some money for our Community Fund. This fund allows us to support local charities through free hall hires, put on events/winter activities and this year we are looking to run a children's fun day (or 2!) through the winter months.

We understand the pressure put on local businesses throughout the year in regards to fundraising, so feel free to message or email us if you would like to donate a prize. 🎉

💡Do you have an idea, project or activity that could support or improve mental health and well being of residents in our Harris community?

Funding is available for grassroots community groups and local organisations to deliver activities that support mental health and wellbeing.

The fund opened on 24th August and closes on 30th October.
