YAAI!
Youth / You Against AI

Here we have a selection of finished shots of 🍓 Gareth Lye ‘s humongous and magnificent mural in Swansea city centre!

Painted entirely by brush, this was the third of five large scale murals being created across the city as part of Muriau Mawr.

Believe it or not, this was Gareth’s first ever mural! With help from Philip Cheater , KarimKamil and Hasan Kamil throughout the process, Gareth completely took to it and was the driving force behind getting it finished, rain or shine!

The ideas came from a community engagement and drawing workshop with the young people at Circus Eruption , organised by the incredible Zoe Gealy .

It’s quite surreal looking back at this a couple of months later, now the weather’s getting colder, remembering summer days painting this enormous piece with a giant cat peeking out from between the buildings!

A huge thank you to St Mary’s Square Developments for providing such an amazing location and to Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru and Swansea Council for their continued support.

What a wall! If Gareth had it his way he’d still be up there in the lift painting!

Scale Up with Ron & Lewis

Our final Scale-Up of the project saw Ronny Oner of Ronny Oner mentoring on painting his first-ever letter piece!

Lewis is a young artist whose traditional wildstyle lettering sketches had lots of flavour, so it was about time he took one from the sketchbook to the wall!

It was great to have a young person with an interest in graffiti involved in the programme alongside the illustrators and fine artists. So many artists working in murals and street art today came from traditional graffiti backgrounds, developing and honing their skills through the culture.

We paired Lewis with Ron, who guided him through the process over a couple of sessions, from the initial outlines and fills through to the 3D, details and final background.

A huge thanks to Ron for sharing his knowledge and experience, and massive respect to Lewis for getting his first piece up!

Looking forward to seeing more pieces from Lewis in the future!

More action shots from our Scale Up initiative, delivered in collaboration with Fresh Creative Co. | 𝕄𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕤

As part of Muriau Mawr, Scale Up is all about giving talented artists the opportunity to take their work from the page to the wall, supported by experienced mural artists along the way.

Owen Harry was mentored by Hasan Kamil , while Amy Kate Wolfe worked alongside Ffion Nolwenn from Fresh Creative Co. | 𝕄𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕤.

Both Owen and Amy are super talented illustrators with their own distinctive styles, but neither had painted a mural before. In just one day they took their designs and scaled them up into their first large scale artworks.

The rain might have stopped us painting outside, but Dee Tee found a way and gave us the perfect space to make it happen!

Have a flick through to see the process and the finished pieces. Both absolutely smashed it 👏 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This weekend we have more Scale ups taking place facilitated by Ronny Oner in Swansea City centre, so keep your eyes peeled for some fantastic new pieces coming soon!

A huge thank you to Fresh Creative Co. | 𝕄𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕤 for collaborating with us and providing the space, MAX WEBBORN for capturing the day, and Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru for supporting Muriau Mawr and helping us create opportunities for artists to develop, experiment and SCALE UP! 🙌

😮A striking new mural has transformed a previously plain city centre wall, with support from Swansea Council.
🎨Created by Swansea artist Gareth Lye, the artwork stands more than 11m high and 9m wide on Park Street, beside the Kardomah café.
👣It forms part of Muriau Mawr, a growing trail of large-scale murals across the city centre.
👏Council cabinet member Elliott King said: “This eye-catching artwork has transformed an uninteresting wall into something people can enjoy every day.
🏢“Projects like this help improve the local environment, celebrate creativity and give residents and visitors even more reason to spend time in our city centre.”
🎪The council-sponsored mural was developed through engagement with young people from Circus Eruption, supported by MIOE Creative Productions.
😺Their ideas helped inspire a design featuring Swansea Castle and a cast of imaginative characters.
🧑‍🎨Gareth Lye said: “Their creativity helped shape the final artwork, and I hope people enjoy discovering the characters and Swansea-inspired details within it.”
☀️Muriau Mawr was developed by FIYA Creative CIC and brings artists, communities and partners together to create distinctive public art.

Meet 🍓 Gareth Lye 🍓

Over the last few weeks, Gareth and the team have been working nonstop on a brand new large-scale mural in Swansea city centre.

This wall has thrown a fair bit at us. Three lift call-outs, plenty of bad weather and grabbing every dry window we could get! But Gareth’s relentless optimism has kept us going throughout. To be honest, we haven’t been able to keep him away from the wall!

Before this, Gareth had never painted a mural before making this the most ambitious scale up yet! At one point we were laughing that some of the brushes we were using were bigger than his original reference painting!

It’s been an absolute joy painting alongside Gareth and watching his work translate to this scale, with Philip Cheater and KarimKamil pitching in throughout the process.

The final touches went on yesterday with Gareth and Hasan Kamil . Today we’re letting the wall completely dry out before the final job of applying a protective coating, which will help preserve the piece and make those colours pop even more. Hence the little reflective post while we wait!

A huge thank you to AKA Media for the daily visits documenting it all. We always knew James was nearby from the sound of the drone hovering above us! 😂

And a massive thank you to Swansea Council and Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru , without whose support this mural wouldn’t have been possible.

We’re almost ready to show you what we’ve been working on…

Full reveal coming very soon! 👀

SOK X GEORGIA 🔥

Some shots from one of our latest Scale Up collaborations with Fresh Creative Co. | 𝕄𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕤 in Swansea.

The Art of SoK was carefully matched with ☆ 𝕲𝖊𝖔𝖗𝖌𝖎𝖆 ☆ , whose bold, comic book inspired character work felt like the perfect fit for Georgia’s tattoo and illustration style. Already a fan of his work, she was over the moon to have him as her mentor and help take one of her character drawings to a much bigger scale.

The Scale Up took place at Fresh Creative Co. | 𝕄𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕤 HQ down Humphrey Lane, with their outdoor walls providing the perfect canvas.

I popped down to see how they were getting on and grabbed some process shots. Georgia absolutely smashed it. Her final piece came out super sharp and clean, and it was a pleasure seeing the process and collaboration come together.

A huge thank you to Fresh Creative Co. | 𝕄𝕦𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕤 for providing the space and helping make this happen.

And a big thank you to Swansea Council and Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru for supporting the project and helping us create opportunities for emerging artists to learn & collaborate 🙌
