The City of Sanctuary Vision in Swansea:

For Swansea to be a place where we celebrate the contribution of people seeking sanctuary and welcome, support and include them wherever they go. City of Sanctuary is a national movement of local people, community groups, businesses and institutions united in a common wish to turn their city into a welcoming place for people seeking sanctuary from war or persecution. Some organisations in Swansea have for years been working alongside people seeking sanctuary. Swansea City of Sanctuary aims to publicise this work and encourage others to join in.

Our next Swansea Asylum Forum & Exchange (SAFE) event takes place on Friday 30th October at 10am in the Grand Multicultural Hub.

This is a great opportunity to meet as a network, share ideas, ask questions and learn what volunteer opportunities are available at SCoS and how to get more involved with the network!

This session will be focusing on our network liaison roles, and will also be an opportunity to create banners for the Swansea Unity March now scheduled for spring 2027.

Why be part of Swansea City of Sanctuary?

Ahead of our AGM, we're sharing some reflections from people and organisations who are part of the SCoS community, showing the different ways you can get involved and the difference it can make.

Here’s what the Gill had to say:

“Being a volunteer and member of Swansea City of Sanctuary has enabled me to both see and participate in the culture of welcome for refugees and asylum seekers in our city. It has been a real eye opener to attend the Community Cohesion events supported by SCoS, such as international concerts, lunches and get togethers where people of all faiths join to share aspects of their different cultures. I have also been able to carry forward the City of Sanctuary vision as a volunteer teacher with Swansea Asylum Seekers Support, one of the many organisations which are a part of SCoS. It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of the vision and practice of welcome, inclusion and shared experience for newcomers to Swansea seeking Sanctuary.”

Here’s what the Stephen had to say:

“I’ve been part of Swansea City of Sanctuary for five years, as volunteer, trustee and treasurer. It’s been a big part of my life. I’ve seen how a warm welcome can make such a difference to people and being involved in the Community Cohesion project has given me a real sense of the benefits that coming together in community can bring. But to sustain this is difficult as there are only a handful of us keeping things going, and it can feel tough at times. We really need more people to join in, become members and get involved! We need more hands, more voices, so we can share the load and give asylum seekers and refugees in Swansea the support they deserve”

There are many different ways to be part of the City of Sanctuary movement. Our Awards programme supports organisations across Swansea to develop their own culture of welcome.

Here’s what the Dylan Thomas Centre, an Arts Centre of Sanctuary, had to say about their experience:

“The Dylan Thomas Centre is thrilled to be an Arts Centre of Sanctuary! We’ve had a busy 12 months since the award. With Eric Ngalle Charles, we’ve run creative writing workshops for people seeking sanctuary throughout the year. During Refugee Week, we launched an anthology of work produced in the sessions, Cof Ydyn i / We are Memory. Published by the brilliant Hafan Books. the anthology also includes work by our Young Writers Squad, by learners at Ysgol Bryn Taw with whom we’ve worked, and the women at Valleys Ethnic Minority Support. This summer, we’ve had a busy programme of family engagement workshops, and it’s been wonderful that talented participants from our writing group have come along with their families.”

Here’s what Sweeta had to say:

“I joined SCoS because I have lived the asylum process from start to British citizenship, and I knew my experience could help others at that confusing and stressful stage, but I couldn't do it alone. SCoS gave me a community of people with brilliant ideas and real skills and working alongside them has been an amazing chance to grow. My activity has been limited lately while I'm studying, but that is only temporary once I qualify, I will be back with even more knowledge and experience to offer. Being part of this group has shown me what happens when good people pool their knowledge, and I'm proud to be a member!”
