Yesterday afternoon the sun shone ☀️ so our team put it to good use by making cyanotypes! 🤍 🩵

Wild Skies is running a cyanotype workshop during this year's UnstFest and wanted to test the materials and process before the big day. After our trial run, we're convinced this creative activity will be great fun for bairns and adults alike.

📅 Save the date: Monday 20th July 2.30-3:30pm
📍 Meet at Uyeasound Hall
Entry by donation
Under 8s must be accompanied by an adult

These photos show the process from start to finish:

🧹 First, two chemicals are mixed together to create a light-sensitive solution called a sensitiser, which is brushed onto paper (don't worry – we'll prepare this part in advance).
🌿 Next, create your design using natural objects with interesting shapes such as flowers, leaves or feathers, or make your own image on a transparent acetate sheet. For our trial, we even made a cyanotype selfie 😄
☀️ The design is then placed onto the sensitised paper and exposed to UV light for a few minutes.
💧 The paper is washed in water to reveal the image.
🌬️ Finally, it's hung out to dry, leaving a beautiful blue-and-white print to take home.

We can't wait to share this fascinating process with you at UnstFest. Who's coming along to give it a try?

If you haven't visited Unst's newest restaurant yet, here's another reason to stop by 🍽️

After three wonderful years at the Unst Heritage Centre, our ‘Wonders of the Shetland Skies’ photography exhibition has found a new home in the viewing area at Da Otter's Neuk in Haroldswick 🦦

Featuring spectacular images by local photographers Robbie Brookes, Steve Birrell, Austin Taylor and Richard Ashbee, the exhibition showcases a stunning range of atmospheric and astronomical phenomena, from the dancing northern lights and dramatic cumulonimbus clouds to mesmerising star trails captured across Shetland 💚💜 ☁️

If you're interested in owning one of these beautiful images, please contact us at [email protected] for more information.

Our Development Officer, Sharyn, was in Mossbank yesterday to give a presentation about Wild Skies Shetland to one of Ability Shetland's fortnightly Club meet ups. This group is made up of adults who face barriers to social opportunities and it was wonderful to share the magic of Shetland's skies with them 💫🤩

Club Leader Tracy said: "It was absolutely fascinating ... they talked about it all the way home and were so excited about it."

We love to hear such positive feedback and hope to welcome some of the group on a future trip to Unst! ❤️💙🧡

Our team was out and about this weekend doing a bit of much-needed maintenance on the Unst Sky Trail ⭐

The Swinna Ness and Framgord audio posts have been out of action so we wandered out, opened them up and changed the rechargeable batteries inside the unit…which did the trick! And it gave the opportunity to listen to the tunes and stories while putting it back together again 🎶 🗣️👌

Both of these ‘sky stops’ are on beautiful coastal walks so it’s always a pleasure, never a chore to get out there with the toolkit 🪛 We also rescued a peerie lamb on the way back that had got its head stuck in the fence at Easting beach 🐑
