🌊 A Major Step Forward for Arctic Ocean Protection
This week at the UN’s International Maritime Organization - IMO in London, British polar explorer Pen Hadow presented a landmark report created by the 90 North Foundation in partnership with the World Maritime University - headquarters.
As the Arctic Ocean loses its protective sea-ice, new shipping and industrial pressures are emerging—bringing serious risks to one of the planet’s most fragile ecosystems. The report outlines how nations can take a decisive step: designating the Central Arctic Ocean as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) to restrict harmful vessel activity and safeguard biodiversity.
The response has been encouraging. Six IMO delegations have already approached the Foundation, expressing early interest in exploring this pathway, with more expected to follow.
Key insights from the report include:
• The high seas around the North Pole-an area the size of India-have long been overstated in economic potential.
• Harsh conditions, low fish stocks, and limited hydrocarbon reserves make large-scale commercial activity unrealistic and potentially devastating.
• Indigenous communities face escalating threats to food security, culture, and sovereignty.
• Arctic ecosystems recover slowly and are exceptionally vulnerable to disturbance.
The report calls for a science-driven governance framework using tools such as PSSAs, Marine Protected Areas, and enhanced international cooperation to keep the Arctic Ocean a haven for biodiversity, research, and peaceful collaboration.
