🎄 5 YEARS OF THE BIG COMMUNITEA | CHRISTMAS DAY

For most people, Christmas Day means family, presents, food and somewhere to belong.

But we know that isn’t everyone’s reality.

That’s why, every Christmas Day, we open our doors.

We give presents. We provide food. We share Christmas dinner. Most importantly, we make sure nobody who needs us has to spend the day feeling completely alone. ❤️

It’s one of the things that sums up The Big Communitea perfectly.

We don’t just talk about community.

We show up for it.

And we’ve been showing up for 5 years.

🎃🐣🎄 5 YEARS OF THE BIG COMMUNITEA | CELEBRATING TOGETHER

Over the last 5 years, we’ve celebrated a lot of seasons together.

Easter egg hunts. Halloween parties. Christmas celebrations. Summer fun. Birthdays, special occasions and all the little moments in between. ✨

Because sometimes it’s not about having loads of money or going somewhere expensive.

Sometimes it’s about having somewhere to go.

Somewhere you feel welcome. Somewhere you can laugh, make memories and celebrate with other people.

We’ve always believed that everyone deserves those moments of joy, and we’ll keep creating them for as many people as we can. 💚🧡💙

🇺🇦 5 YEARS OF THE BIG COMMUNITEA | SHOWING UP FOR OTHERS

Our story isn’t just about what has happened in Selby. It’s also about the moments when we’ve looked beyond our own doors and asked, “What can we do to help?”

When Ukraine was facing unimaginable circumstances, our community came together. We filled vans and buses with donations, food and essential supplies and made multiple journeys to support people who desperately needed help. 💙💛

It was a huge effort, but that’s what The Big Communitea has always been about.

Seeing a need. Bringing people together. And doing something about it.

5 years on, that spirit of helping others is still at the heart of everything we do.

This week, we’re looking back at the journey that brought us here. ❤️

❤️ A GIVEAWAY WITH A MEANINGFUL TWIST ❤️

Sometimes a little giveaway turns into something much more meaningful.

I'd like to give a special mention to our competition winner, Dave Mountford who has made a genuinely heartwarming gesture.

Rather than keeping his prize, Dave has chosen to donate it to The Big Communi-Tea, Selby, in support of the fantastic work they do for mental health within our local community.

This gesture is particularly special as Dave has chosen to do this in loving memory of his late wife, Jean Mountford, who sadly passed away in 2022. ❤️

I think this says a lot about Dave's character, and I'd like to personally thank him for turning a competition win into an opportunity to give something back to others.

A huge thank you to The Big Communi-Tea for the work you do supporting people who need someone to listen.

Dave, this is what community spirit is all about. Your generosity deserves recognition. 👏❤️

Support isn’t always about solving a crisis.

Sometimes it’s about giving someone something to look forward to.

Over the years, we’ve taken people on trips and created experiences that they may never have had the opportunity to experience otherwise.

A trip to the theatre. 🎭
A day at the races. 🏇
A day at the beach. 🌊
Days out, adventures and memories.

Because we believe people deserve more than simply getting through the day.

They deserve experiences. They deserve laughter. They deserve memories. They deserve purpose.

That’s what The Big Communitea is about.

Not just helping people survive, but helping people live. 💚

🏠 5 YEARS OF THE BIG COMMUNITEA | WE GOT OUR FIRST FRONT DOOR

In 2021, The Big Communitea finally had a front door.

A place where you could walk in.

A place where you could have a brew, sit down, talk, ask for help or simply be around other people.

And then in 2022, things grew again.

We opened our first charity shop, providing affordable furniture and household items for people leaving homelessness or crisis.

We started a drop in café with affordable and free food.

And most importantly, The Big Communitea continued to grow as a service user led organisation.

What started with a cup of tea had become something much bigger.

But we were only getting started. 💚

☕️ 5 YEARS OF THE BIG COMMUNITEA | WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Every story has a beginning.

Ours started with something incredibly simple.

A cup of tea. A chat. And the belief that nobody should have to face a difficult day alone.

The idea came from something so many of us take for granted. Being able to sit down with a friend for a brew. But what happens when you can’t afford that cup of tea? 🍵

So The Big Communitea was born.

What started with a simple idea grew into a mental health first aid network, a charity, a drop in centre, a furniture shop, food support, trips, activities and a community of people looking out for one another.

This week, we’re taking you through that journey.

Back to where it all began. ❤️

5 years ago, The Big Communitea started with a simple idea… to create a place where people could come together, feel supported, make friends and know that they weren’t alone. 💚

And what started as an idea has grown into something so much bigger than we could have imagined.

Throughout this week, we’ll be sharing the story of The Big Communitea, from those very first days, through all the challenges, changes, memories and milestones, right up to where we are today.
