The NCI Station at St Ives is situated high on the extremity of the Island promontory. From here we monitor weather and sea conditions and provide information for mariners, fishermen, walkers and other users of the sea and coast. We work closely with our partners, the RNLI, H

M Coastguard, HM Coastguard Air Sea Rescue, HM Customs and Excise, Border Agency and all the emergency services. At the same time we safeguard the environment by observing coastal and marine life. The St Ives Station was opened in 1999. After only two years we gained the award of Declared Facility Status and are now part of the UK search and rescue service. Over forty fully trained, volunteer watchkeepers, from all walks of life, operate the Station during normal working hours, while two emergency teams are on standby, 24 hours every day. Watchkeepers monitor coastal activity, aided by the use of expensive equipment. Radar, radio and AIS all help in preventing and reacting to any potential emergency.

An appeal to keep dogs on leads along Cornwall's coast paths.

Colin has worked as a referral orthopaedic and spinal surgeon here in Cornwall for nearly 20years.
Every summer, we see pets who've fallen on the coast path: injuries include broken limbs and fractured spines; with ruptured lungs and abdominal bleeding.
A moment's distraction, a missed step, a flying gull to chase, and tragedy can swiftly follow. Never intended, always regretted.
Please, when enjoying Cornwall's beautiful coast path with your pets: keep your dogs on leads, and lets aim to make this the first summer free from major trauma cases.

Before you head out to the coast for a walk or swim etc remember these great tips from the RNLI.

- Check the weather, tides and sea conditions before you go.
- Take warm clothes, a hot drink and a phone in a waterproof pouch.
- Never swim alone, go with somebody you trust and choose a familiar spot. Let someone know your plans and attend a pre-organised dip.
- Enter the water slowly and never jump in. Walk in, let your breathing settle and swim when you feel in control and comfortable.
- Wear a brightly coloured swim cap and consider using a tow float.
- Stay within your limits. Swim parallel to the shore and know when it's time to get out.
- If you get into difficulty, Float to Live.
- If you or someone else needs help, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

If in doubt, don't go out. There will always be another day for a safe and enjoyable swim.
