Last Friday, we welcomed a delegation from (NWMF) to Liverpool, travelling over from the north of Ireland, for our joint Responding to the Hostile Environment: Migration, Community Shared Learning, EDI and Attacks on Black Excellence event.
NWMF joined us before attending the National Diversity Awards that evening, where they were nominees.
We brought together leaders from across the UK — civil rights campaigners, academics, and people working across non-profits and organisations supporting migrant communities — for a day of honest and urgent conversation.
Lee Jasper () opened with a powerful insight into the national picture and how far-right narratives are impacting migrants and marginalised communities.
Lilian Seenoi-Barr () and Shannon Doherty from Northwest Migrants Forum spoke about the lived realities of those who experienced the Belfast riots.
Femi Oluwole () brought his media insight into right-wing narratives and the prominent figures driving them.
Chantelle Lunt () spoke about wellbeing and self-care — a vital reminder for all of us doing this work.
And Anna Rothery closed the day, bringing her professional insight from the health sector and tying together many of the themes that had emerged throughout the day.
This conversation continues on from our local convening earlier this month, where we brought together organisations from across the Liverpool City Region.
A big part of both days has been reflecting on how we respond to what we’re seeing, while recognising that many of the old structures have been decimated. We have to build new ones.
