We’re very grateful to former Rushden resident John Hobbs, who has sent us these wonderful pictures all the way from southern California where he now lives.

The three photos are of Rushden Operatic Society’s first production, “Blossom Time”, in April 1947. John’s Mum, Kath Hobbs, was in the chorus.

Twenty years, including the long war period, had passed since Rushden last staged a major musical production - and this was a large-scale production at the Ritz.

“In front of the stage, Mr Oswald Lawrence was getting everything possible out of the singers and orchestra. Miss Anne Hogwood was a worthy leading lady – Vicki – and Mr Sydney Hudson played Count Rudi.” (Rushden Hearts & Soles)

One of the old adverts featured in last night’s quiz was for this store on Fitzwilliam Street.

The business founded by Jane and Tom Young in 1955 was known as Wright & Young’s Building Centre and later Building & Homemaker. It catered both for the building trade and the ‘new army’ of keen DIY amateurs. There’s another tonight, so you are all very welcome to exercise your mental muscles again at 7.30pm!

This photo, taken last Thursday, has absolutely nothing to do with the quiz, and it’s of nowhere in Rushden. (Although only about five miles away)

I was on the way home from what looks like being my last warm walk of the year ... and couldn’t help but admire how that wonderful cloud formation was pointing the way!

🔑 THE LOCATION, although only five-ish miles from Rushden, is actually in another county. The photo was taken on the way back from Upper Dean (in Bedfordshire) on the road towards Melchbourne and Yelden (and of course Rushden). I'd had a lovely walk up the green lane to Spanoak Wood, where a chance meeting with a stranger had made my day!

Many thanks to Rushden Museum Friends for posting this photo on their website. It shows Mrs Neville’s class of 1972/73 at Hayway Infants’School.

I’ve taken the liberty of colourising their picture, as I haven’t quite kicked that habit yet! It brings back the memories of those days when we sent our films off to Truprint, and got the prints back in the post... along with that important free roll of film of course! Remember that?
