We are delighted to announce Heritage Lab Ramsgate has secured a major grant of up to £250,000 over three years from Historic England, with £107,000 confirmed for year one, marking a significant milestone for our organisation and a major boost for heritage-led regeneration in Ramsgate.

The capacity-building funding – awarded to organisations with the potential to deliver transformational change for historic places – will support a three-year programme focused on bringing more of Ramsgate’s historic buildings back into active, sustainable use, whilst strengthening community engagement.

We are hiring for two new roles as part of the funded programme: a Fundraising & Development Manager and an Engagement Officer. Full details on our website at https://www.heritagelab.org.uk/join-our-team-2-roles-available-fundraising-development-manager-and-engagement-officer/.

The funded programme, ‘Connecting Ramsgate’s Heritage’, builds on Historic England’s previous Heritage Action Zone investment within Ramsgate, and will strengthen partnerships and develop and deliver a pipeline of key heritage projects across the town. Historic England funding for years two and three will build on the progress made in year one, subject to the delivery of agreed outputs.

Heritage Lab Ramsgate will build on its ongoing engagement with other local heritage stakeholders and Thanet District Council to explore opportunities for underused heritage assets. This includes supporting the Ramsgate Heritage Community Buildings Forum – a network of organisations collaborating to champion heritage, share knowledge, and shape a joined-up programme of activity alongside the Neighbourhood Board.

Historic England supports organisations to develop the skills, partnerships and capacity needed to care for and revitalise England's historic environment.

Building of the East Cliff Chine Ramsgate. Opened 1936. 🥲 Shame nothing is looked after - cleaned up by volunteers YES but I mean the actual fabric of the Chine, the benches, the CRACKS ! 2010, 16 YEARS! ago had meeting with council and Claude Hitching (RIP) author of a book on Pulhamite sited all over Ramsgate and the rest of the country. 'Rock Landscapes - The Pulham Legacy'

Perhaps they can be sold off and little flats inserted along its rise to the East Cliff. Have a great day . . . . ! 🤠

Thank you to everyone who’s joined the discussion — we’ve been genuinely blown away by the response. It’s been amazing to see how much this site means to people, and the conversation has already been picked up by local media as well as The Sun and The Independent. We’ll keep sharing updates as things develop.

An Olympic-sized bathing pool was built on the site in the 1930s

Let's make this happen!

Imagine swimming here again…

We’re in early discussions with an experienced developer who’s interested in creating an outdoor swimming pool complex on Ramsgate’s East Cliff.

This site is currently a car park, one of several council-owned sites Thanet District Council is considering selling. But it wasn’t always this way.

This was once the Marina Bathing Pool. Built in the mid-1930s, it featured an Olympic-sized pool, a diving area and filtered sea water. It closed in 1975 after structural issues and was later filled in and paved over.

Fast forward to today: Thanet has a thriving sea and open-water swimming culture, with people of all ages swimming year-round for wellbeing and connection. Outdoor swimming isn’t niche anymore – it’s a movement. Pair it with saunas, cafés or social spaces and you create something truly special: a year-round destination for locals and visitors alike.

Could this place return to its original purpose?
