From France, to Suffolk, to Hayling - Wildfires are burning across Europe, the UK and even closer to home.

More than half of the UK is in drought, we can see that in our local green spaces which resemble a savannah.

Higher temperatures mean more wildfires and droughts which means failing crops and lower food production. Higher temperatures are breaking the boundaries of sustaining life. This is an emergency.

It’s easy to feel scared and powerless in these times, but the best cure for despair is action.

Here are some things you can do to feel empowered and protect your community in the heatwaves we are experiencing:

National Emergency Briefing:
These are organised by local residents - a short documentary with senior figures from the NHS, military and financial system talking about the risks the UK is facing from climate breakdown.

Next one - 7pm on 13th August @ Mountbatten Centre, Hilsea

✍️Sign the petition for the government to hold a UK-wide briefing on climate and nature risks

Heatstrike:
Join a collective strike on the hottest day of the year
Set up a cooling station in your area
Know your rights! under section 44 of Employment Rights Act 1996, you have the right to refuse to work in an unsafe environment

Heatwave Toolkit:
This website explores highly-effective, low-effort, low-cost, and rapidly-deployable solutions to keep homes cool during a UK heatwave. Most of these solutions are also landlord-friendly!

Greenwashing can be hard to spot on earth day!

Let's remember, Earth Day started in the 1970's as a protest!

Rather than falling for greenwashing, here are some tangible things that have a genuine impact:

💚 Join a group taking collective action
💚 Choose a vegan option
💚 Organise mutual aid in whatever form your local community needs
