This commitment continues throughout the year through regular meetings. Althoug
h the Christmas Lights receives a grant from Portishead Town Council, the majority of the £20,000+ annual costs are met from local fundraising. Over the years many local groups have generously chosen to raise money in various ways for the Lights. This is much appreciated and has helped us to pursue a process of continual improvement. Portishead Christmas Lights are put up, taken down and organised by 90 volunteers (approx!). In recent years there have been successful attempts to put on a bigger and better show than the previous year. Peter’s Church tower, new shops behind Lloyds Bank, and High Street extensions as far as Gordano School, Station Road, Harbour Road and Waitrose Piazza are all examples of improvments we have made in recent years. The Portishead Christmas Lights now represent a ‘Golden Mile’ of festive illumination
The Portishead Christmas Lights team help provide volunteer marshals at the Raft Race and the Carnival. Because we are good with ladders, we work with our friends Portishead in Bloom to put up summer banners in the High Street, and we put up and take down the bunting for the flower show.
